Black Cat Looking Straight Ahead by contemporary Japanese artist Toshiyuki Enoki (born 1961).
Positioned squarely in the center of a heavily textured, antiqued golden ground, a jet-black cat sits in erect, motionless composure, staring directly out at the viewer. Its dense dark coat is rendered with meticulous, micro-fine brushwork, giving tactile softness to the chest and ears while contrasting sharply against the coarse, woven grain of the underlying substrate. Two large, luminous amber eyes—framed by thin golden irises and wide, dilated pupils—glow with unblinking intensity, serving as the sole vibrant point of light within the ink-dark silhouette. At the base, a single tail curls smoothly outward across the muted canvas, while in the lower left corner, a bright vermilion and yellow circular seal bearing the artist's mark anchors the lower register.
Painted by contemporary artist Toshiyuki Enoki (born 1961), this work continues Japan’s long-standing painterly fascination with feline mystery, drawing a direct lineage from Hishida Shunshō’s iconic 1910 Nihonga masterpiece Black Cat (Kuroki Neko) and the whimsical cats of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Enoki, trained in traditional Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) techniques, silk painting, and lacquer restoration, employs a distinctive technique involving natural mineral pigments (iwanogu), gold leaf, and layered glazes on textured canvas or hemp paper. His unique monozukuri (artisanal mastery) fuses traditional Japanese material culture with surreal, otherworldly sensibilities, transforming a domestic subject into a timeless, talismanic icon that feels both ancient and modern.

The Etruscan tumulus of Pisa, ca. 700 BCE. Carefully excavated in the 1990s, no remains were found in the central chamber, and is interpreted as a cenotaph. An iron trident was deposited above, and a horse was sacrificed on an altar on top, which was then dismantled and interred.
Vertical photo of an open grassy area, in the middle of which is a very wide (about 30 meter diameter) low tumulus, surrounded by a ring of standing slabs of schist. In the sky is the sun, causing a lens flare that curves upwards, mirroring the curve of the tumulus.

Lively #MosaicMonday from posh C4 #Roman villa at Horkstow Lincs once featured wheel w Orpheus in centre enchanting animals including this bear, elephant (yes really) + 6 others in panels around him. Now over Humber in Hull Museum of Archaeology 🏺 For painting of mosaics after 1797 discovery see 2/.
A partial survival of an interesting mosaic of Orpheus (who would have been in now missing centre of wheel like device) and 8 animals, 2 of which remain. In left remaining section is a part of a bear pouncing forward from hind legs. On right is an elephant, missing its trunk, with long legs. Below the wheel to the left a figure can be seen in the corner of the mosaic.
Two wide bands that would have bounded the mosaic are seen - one guilloche and one floral vault variation - with rows of triangles pointing up and down on a white line between them. Colours throughout the mosaic are shades of red/brown plus black, white and grey.

Kitty paw prints on a Roman clay tile! 😻 🐾 A tiny moment in time preserved in clay some 2,000 years ago when a kitten walked across this wet clay tile which was lying out to dry before firing. Lullingstone Roman Villa, Kent 📷 by me #Caturday #Archaeology
My photo shows two kitten pawprints imprinted on a Roman red clay roof tile (tegula). There are two prints, one print near the upper left corner of the tile and another below it closer to the centre. Each imprint has four toe pads arranged in a gentle arc at the top of a larger central pad. There are no visible claw marks (unlike with dogs prints) as cats usually retract their claws when walking.
The imprints were made as a kitten walked across a wet clay tile which was lying out to dry before firing. The tile was found at Lullingstone Roman Villa in Kent, where it is on display at the site museum.

Tutankhamun’s ‘Duck Head’ shoes! 1330–1323 BC. Extraordinary sandals with gold insoles and gold daisies on a lapis lazuli beaded background - but the standout detail has to be the teeny-tiny gold duck heads projecting from the top strap! 🦆🦆❤️ Grand Egyptian Museum, Cairo 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a pair of flat, open shoes with ornately decorated sides and upper and lower straps which run across the open top of the shoe attached to each side. A toe bar/thong runs down the top of the foot, attached to the straps and sole of the shoe. The leather outer sole is covered with a gold insole which is pointed at the front. The sides of the shoes and the wider upper strap are intricately decorated with gold daisies on a lapis lazuli beaded background. Projecting from the upper strap, either side of where the toe thong is attached, is a small projecting gold duck head which gives the shoes their nickname. The duck heads are inlaid with blue glass on the top and sides. These ornate shoes were found in the antechamber of Tutankhamun’s Tomb in the Valley of the Kings. Reign of Tutankhamun, c. 1330–1323 BC.

Black Cats, by Japanese artist Tadashige Nishida (1993).
This striking contemporary woodblock print by Tadashige Nishida, titled Black Cats, offers a bold, minimalist exploration of feline grace, tension, and concentration. Created in 1993, the composition features two sleek black cats positioned one above the other against a clean, unadorned cream-colored background, establishing a compelling visual study in parallel motion and predatory form. The upper feline is captured mid-air, its elongated body fully extended in an elegant, powerful leap. Its front paws are slightly tucked as it anticipates landing, while its long tail curves gracefully upward to stabilize its trajectory through space. In direct contrast to this airborne moment, the lower cat is depicted in a low, compressed crouch, its muscles taut and its weight shifted forward as it creeps along an invisible ground line in a classic predatory stalk.

Nishida renders the felines using a dense, deeply saturated black ink that defines their sleek forms. To prevent the silhouettes from flattening entirely against the light background, he masterfully outlines their contours with an exceptionally fine, glowing turquoise-blue line. This subtle technical detail provides vital anatomical definition to their limbs, ears, and backs, infusing the dark shapes with a vibrant, electric energy. Both cats share piercing, crystalline yellow eyes with narrow black pupils, locked in an intense, unwavering gaze on an unseen target just past the left edge of the frame.

Waterhen by Ohara Koson (1877-1945), Japan
by the master artist Ohara Koson (1877–1945) depicts a solitary waterhen (Moorhen) standing poised in a shallow marsh. Renowned for his exceptional ability to capture the lifelike textures and quiet dignity of the natural world, Koson was a leading figure in the early 20th-century Shin-hanga (New Prints) movement, which revived traditional ukiyo-e collaborative workshop methods while introducing subtle Western techniques of light and perspective.

The composition centers on the volumetric, rounded body of the waterhen, which is rendered with exquisite gradations of grey, charcoal, and black ink (bokashi) to simulate the soft, dense texture of its plumage. The bird is captured in a classic, serene posture, balancing gracefully on its long, segmented left leg while its right leg is tucked up close to its breast. Its head is turned back over its shoulder, revealing a bright, attentive golden-orange eye and a matching short, pointed orange beak adorned with a soft red frontal shield at the brow. A small flash of white feathers accents the underside of its upturned tail, providing a sharp contrast to the deeper, velvety tones of its wings.

The setting is minimalist and atmospheric, utilizing a soft, cream-colored background that evokes a misty, early morning or overcast day. The bird stands at the edge of a tranquil body of water, its single leg casting a fine, vertical reflection onto the mirror-like surface. Faint, horizontal washes of pale grey indicate gentle ripples in the water, while a few small, oval lily pads float quietly nearby. Rising behind the bird on the right side of the frame are slender, delicate stalks of wild marsh grass or reeds, executed in soft shades of sage green. The fine, linear strokes of the grass blades provide a beautiful geometric counterpoint to the soft, curved silhouette of the waterhen.

This #Roman gold ring is set with a carved triangular hyacinthine garnet cameo with the head of a youth in a Phrygian cap. Perhaps Ganymede, ‘cup-bearer’ (ha!) to Zeus-Jupiter. The backlighting shows the colorful transparency of this stone. Pretty! 🏺 1/ 1st-2nd c. CE. #BritishMuseum 📸 me
Backlit triangular stone, set into a gold ring. The colors range from a deep yellow, to fiery orange and red. The sculptural head in the middle is a somewhat worried looking young man looking to the side; he wears a Phrygian cap, shorthand in the Greek and Roman world for a person from the east. Given his youth, he’s thought to be Ganymede, the ‘cup-bearer’ (read: bedmate) of Zeus.
