Bit of a random blog post, but sometimes my weird little hobbies and work coincide: How to build a watch to celebrate an academic milestone! www.dalmaijer.org/2026/10/maki...
This is a photo of a watch in a presentation box. The box is of a brown wood, with a glass top, and a velvety brown interior. The watch inside is on a black strap; the case is polished stainless steel, 33 mm in diameter, and fitted with a curved crystal and a modest crown. The dial shows the red logo of the University of Bristol above the hands, the text “PhD” in black, and red lines to mark the hours. The hour and minute hands are steel-coloured with rounded tips and bars of lume, and the second hand is black with a curved end.

If you're unsure about modern medicine and whether to vaccinate your kids, I recommend visiting a local church's old graveyard. Look at the ages of the deceased. It's utterly devastating just how many children are buried there. We don't have to repeat this.
Grave/memorial stone for three children from one family, who died aged 6, 7, and 1.

Serious science question from one kid: "What happens to time in a black hole?" My highly inexpert answer was followed by the other kid: "What about if I threw a poo at a black hole?" Very relieved to know I only have to save up for one round of university tuition.

🚨New preprint🚨 Available here: osf.io/preprints/ps... Do adolescents who report feeling addicted to social media share a single behavioural-emotional profile? We analysed data from >7,000 UK adolescents and found, strikingly, that **47%** feel addicted to social media.

In this time of redundancies all across UK higher education, it feels a bit worrying when administrators take an interest in your work...
Variation on the classic meme of Ralph Wiggum sitting in a bus, chuckling, and then saying "I'm in danger!" Wiggum is wearing a mortar board. Next to him we can see a LinkedIn screenshot that says "Education Administrator at University of Bristol viewed your profile."

I once had the embarrassing experience of someone gingerly noting that our supposedly "open" data was actually on a private repository. We simply forgot to set it to "public" and nobody had noticed. For MONTHS.

Average editor: Tick suggested names, send automated review requests. Good editor: Find relevant reviewers, send personalised messages. IEEE Systems Journal: Keep spamming the same potential reviewers even after they reject multiple times. One hundred “no” and one “yes” means “yes”, baby!

On the one hand, it's great to know people are using sunscreen. On the other, I would have preferred to learn this through other means than slipping off the building's greasy (but fresh-smelling!) door handle.

These are wonderful. I love when they complain about timetabling as well, as I store those things away as ammunition when I get awful slots. But the best ones are those that insult your very being. Comments on appearance, voice, and other fundamental qualities of you as a person. Keeps one humble.

Big "for me, it was Tuesday" energy. Also, not all of us are like this! Some of us have a pathological need to be liked and will randomly wake up, drenched in sweat, stressing about that one slightly negative comment on an evaluation from 2021. Students can (and should) abuse these character flaws.

Finally had enough of my smart watch. Constant notifications, patronising reminders, and low sleep scores for waking to attend children. I used to sell expensive watches. Disliked over-affluent customers, but loved the mechanisms. This one isn't particularly high-end, but so much less disruptive!

Accept that you'll be doing a worse job for at least a couple of years, likely more. Prioritise what's best for your career (papers, grants) and down-weight what isn't (form-filling, admin, reviews). Especially for low-priority stuff, strategically half-arse things that don't need to be perfect ;)

True, which is in part a worrying trend across software EULAs, in part potentially unenforceable, and in part sometimes just fair enough. That said, Dropbox sells a real product. It isn’t branded as fancy “AI” while in its EULA going “lol, this is just for jokes actually”.

Reads like an April Fool’s joke, but the last update to this was in October 2025. In brief: the Terms of Use suggest that Copilot is not a serious tool, can fuck up at any given point (no warranty), and users are solely responsible for any consequences (indemnity for Microsoft). Great software!

Isn't it astounding how it primarily addresses a problem of our own making? Organisations dislike departmental credit cards, so we have to pay for travel ourselves and reclaim. Finance is slow, so we're out of pocket for ages. Key Travel solves that, so we pay it handsomely for our own incompetence.

Although with the added irony that a university is highly likely to have an expert in exactly the thing it’s buying or doing, but they aren’t consulted by the senior and/or central teams who make these decisions 🙃 The exception is in ERP software. All of it is awful, regardless of buyer.
