New paper out today: "The Boolean lattice B₆ is not a sphere order" arxiv.org/abs/2610.02329 This is the first explicit example of a finite poset that is not a sphere order, although we have known since Felsner, Fishburn & Trotter (1999) that some exist: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Using the equivalence of sphere order representations of posets with Minkowski space embeddings, we show that the Boolean lattice $\mathcal{B}_6$ is not a sphere order. This is the first explicit fini...

@karinfischer.bsky.social, "There’s no shortage of fictional characters — think Elle Woods and Will Hunting — who can be found roaming Harvard Yard." www.chronicle.com/article/high... I don't think either _Legally Blonde_ or _Good Will Hunting_ ever places its main character in Harvard Yard.

8/She has thrived ever since. I’m glad @nhannahjones.bsky.social’s daughter finally got to attend a good school (& really learn algebra). If she happens to come to @ucsandiego.bsky.social for college, I hope she’s in one of my classes.

7/So unlike @nhannahjones.bsky.social, we made our daughter’s welfare our priority. She said she wanted to learn French, so we enrolled her at the San Diego French American School for 3rd grade, even though she knew no French.

6/By part way through 2nd grade it was clear it was hopeless. Even in this relatively good public elementary school, changes for which we pushed didn’t happen, the kids were disruptive & 2/3 of Ms18’s teachers had been ineffectual.

5/We spoke out about problems; our School Board representatives came to know me well; I even confronted the Superintendent at one point.

4/This gave us the impression we could influence the school. My wife volunteered in the classroom, we attended PTA meetings, I joined the school site council, and we attended school cluster meetings.

3/On the 1st morning the teacher had the girls & boys in segregated seating, w/pink & blue name plaques. We confronted the Principal about it at the “sad parents coffee”, and Ms18 told us the teacher had been forced to mix the tables after lunch.

David Meyer @dajmeyer.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
2/Longer answer: motivated by similar egalitarian, if not anti-racist, ideals, we sent Ms18 to our local elementary school (relatively good by San Diego public school standards) for kindergarten.

1/ @nhannahjones.bsky.social, In Fighting for Every Black Child, Did I Betray My Own? www.nytimes.com/2026/09/20/m... Short answer, yes. “Because these public schools admit students based on a single entrance test, Faraji and I have long opposed them”

A decade ago, I made a decision about my daughter’s education that I hoped would challenge New York City’s separate and unequal school system. Now 16, she thinks I made the wrong choice.

This book, edited by Grybauskas, includes Tolkien’s alliterative poetic drama, _The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth_, the leader of the defeated Anglo-Saxon defenders. There is a statue of him, at age 68 (so I should have a few more good years!), at the end of the #Maldon Promenade.

#Maldon is perhaps best known for Maldon Salt Co., but long before that company was formed, it was the site of the defeat of the Anglo-Saxons by the Vikings in August 991, described in _The Battle of Maldon_. I found this translation by Tolkien in a bookstore there on High Street.
