Explained “Being irrational” to the older kids in the San Diego Math Circle this morning: √2, e, and π. Latter required instant calculus: derivatives of polynomials and sin & cos, integral as area, and Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. A 2.5 hour marathon!

I just read this paragraph in @philippullmanreal.bsky.social’s _The Secret Commonwealth_ and realized that captchas are a kind of catechism.

This book, edited by Grybauskas, includes Tolkien’s alliterative poetic drama, _The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth_, the leader of the defeated Anglo-Saxon defenders. There is a statue of him, at age 68 (so I should have a few more good years!), at the end of the #Maldon Promenade.

#Maldon is perhaps best known for Maldon Salt Co., but long before that company was formed, it was the site of the defeat of the Anglo-Saxons by the Vikings in August 991, described in _The Battle of Maldon_. I found this translation by Tolkien in a bookstore there on High Street.

My PhD advisor and dear friend, Rafael Sorkin, passed away Saturday night. I was thinking of him Sunday afternoon in the @jesuscollegecam.bsky.social Chapel while the organist was practicing. Rafael was not particularly religious, but he would have appreciated the music.

We started our very English day by visiting Flatford, where John Constable painted his most famous landscape, _The Hay Wain_. There is a lot of duckweed because the summer has been so hot. The model of the hay wain is at #Colchester Castle @colmuseums.bsky.social.
