In this case, it wasn’t a control centre like some other companies have. XC’s control room is just a floor in an office building - much like ours.

I would prerefer a clunky bilingual message to the one that happened last night. That’s how Nova Scotia handled it when I got alerts there. Without knowing all the details, my hunch is that sending 2 at the same time would lead to one replacing/overriding the other.

Ah, so we have had that here in Wales. Rhun has been all over social media and the news talking about the issues over the last day or two. And we’ve had huge fires causing disruption for 3 weeks now, with multiple critical incidents, and houses burnt.

I think these messages are still used so infrequently, we’re a long way off that being a risk. Before today the only uses have been Red danger to life weather warnings. Arguably, this is the same sort of situation.

Given how many very serious fires there are around me & family at the moment, I’m disappointed they didn’t send this days earlier.

Many people. If you live in a poor/no mobile signal area, like the rural area I’m in, you don’t get them.

Always good to know the emergency alerts have been sent. Of course, those of us who live in rural areas don’t get them because we have poor/no mobile signal.

Sometimes you come across good ones. We’ve got a great 11kwh charger at the local golf course. It’s cheap, reliable, electoverse compatible. But quite often most of them are drawing from a small single phase supply, and use cheap kit.
010
Dafydd Vaughan @daivaughan.uk · 08/08/2026
I tend to find that rapid chargers are better maintained, and work better than some of the slower ones (even though they’re more expensive). 22kwh chargers are mostly ok. Below 22kwh, they’re really hit and miss.
110
Dafydd Vaughan @daivaughan.uk · 08/08/2026
And then sometimes the charger is just shit. Cable refused to release on a local authority a few months ago. Had to spend 30 mins on the phone waiting for someone to remotely reset the charger so cable could be released.
110
Dafydd Vaughan @daivaughan.uk · 08/08/2026
My car will “charge” at 11kwh on an AC charger (many of them) but can go upto 160kwh on a DC charger. In reality, that’s more normally 8/9kwh and 100kwh. Top rates only really achieved when battery is ~20-50%.
210
Dafydd Vaughan @daivaughan.uk · 08/08/2026
The user interfaces on many public chargers are generally really bad. Particularly those that don’t have screens. I also take the advertised kW/h rate with a pinch of salt. It’s often shared across chargers, and is dependent on state of the battery/weather/temp etc.

More than 24 hours into my journey home from an in-person work day in Liverpool. At least 2 more hours to go. Sometimes public transport is great. Sometimes it's absolute 💩. Power failure, displaced crew, train fault, points failure, damaged from a fire. All separate incidents, all in one journey.

If your roadmap says you won't deliver anything tangible to a user for 18 months, your strategy is broken. The organisation will run out of patience long before then. Here is the second story in my series on delivering change through momentum and trust: dafyddvaughan.uk/blog/2026/mo...

Dafydd Vaughan @daivaughan.uk · 18/07/2026
At the DVLA, we faced a paper logbook system handling 20m transactions a year. Instead of a multi-year project, we isolated one thin slice: part-exchanges. Ruthlessly limiting our scope meant we could get something in front of real users quickly, and establish a constant flow of delivery.
110
Dafydd Vaughan @daivaughan.uk · 18/07/2026
When organisations face a major transformation, the default instinct is to plan a massive, multi-year roadmap. But all-or-nothing plans multiply your risk and starve projects of their most critical currency: trust. If you want to succeed, you must break the problem down into small slices.

This past 48 hours has been horrific. Out of nowhere, Dilys’s back went again. This was her 4th or 5th round of IVDD. We’ve lost count by now. But this one was different, no warning. So much pain. And she wouldn’t or couldn’t let us help her. We’ve been at the vets 3 times since Thursday night

Full blown rage before 7.30 trying to report (another) water leak to Dŵr Cymru. That was FAR harder than it needed to be. (We’ve had next to no water for more than 24 hours from another leak. Now there is one at the end of the road that has already been “fixed” 3 times this year)

Learning to pronounce someone's name correctly is a fundamental matter of respect. But the recent reaction to our new First Minister, Rhun ap Iorwerth, shows how quickly that basic boundary breaks down when it comes to Welsh identity and language.

These names are a core part of our everyday culture and national fabric - not a sideshow to laugh at. Expecting people to learn how to say a name or a place is a completely reasonable boundary, but joking about anglicising someone's identity is just disrespectful dafyddvaughan.uk/blog/2026/we...

Personally, I spent years shortening Dafydd to 'Dai' in my professional career to make things easier for people. We see the exact same resistance with the naming of our Senedd, and with historic names like Eryri and Bannau Brycheiniog

This casual disrespect has deep roots. For generations, the British state actively suppressed the Welsh language and culture, most famously through the system of the Welsh Not in schools - where children faced physical punishment for speaking in Welsh.

A bit of Saturday morning reading... The new Welsh Gov has a "first 100-day plan", but I've been hearing people say that it's too short a time to delivery any meaningful change. I disagree - 100-days is a perfect opportunity to start building momentum and show a different way of working.
