The editorial conveniently leaves out any mention of the NYT's full throated support for the case to invade Iraq, which now they say was "preposterously thin in retrospect". Did they think no one was going to remember their complicity?

Opinion | How a Heroic Response Went Awry
Twenty-five years after 9/11, it is important to step back from today’s cynicism and remember the heroism and national unity in the hours and days after the attacks.

You always know when the climax of a John Woo movie is imminent because suddenly there are tons of bad guy extras in the frame wearing white suits and t-shirts. (the cream coat btw is worn by the marvelous HK character actor Waise Lee)

A very very easy way to fix this and make the elderly fare sustainable would be to return the fare discount to 65+. I really don't understand why they haven't done this. Without raising the age limit, it's clear that the current 80% off fare scheme is going to have to be increased yearly.

What's even the point of sending ground troops to stop Iran's nuke program? They got more powerful leverage now, plus an income stream that makes sanctions worthless. I despair of the idiots in charge of the US, and the pain they are causing the rest of the world www.ft.com/content/04f6...

Hong Kong chill: Lok just sits himself casually down on a public bench to joke with young fans. Next to him on the benches two grizzled white Brit dudes continue chugging seaside beers, oblivious that the guy next to them has just pulled off an extraordinary athletic feat.

Hometown fave Liu Fo Lok just sailed to the finish line in 56h 39m. It’s his second time finishing this punishing race, and at one point he took a wrong turn on The Peak and had to backtrack! Gotta say he appears more tired compared to Julian (the first finisher)

The Weight of Words For HKers, language is our identity. We speak Cantonese. We write in traditional Chinese. And during the pro-democracy protests when it seemed like no one would hear us, we just made up some new words that speak our truth. Source: Telegram/ Ah-To (Dec 2019)

This is the energy we bring to the Mamdani era: We know a city can be magic and transformative, that it can be a place where your life changes because you got lost in that neighborhood, or went to that party, or woke up on that couch. We know that New York City is possible because we lived in it.

There's a particular joy I'm finding now, gathering in NYC with groups of my age cohort. We remember what the city was like when you could live on a song and art was everywhere. We remember the clubs we danced at, the drugs we shared, the crazy characters who became famous and the ones that didn't.

Lai is conservative, Catholic, and had connections with powerful Republicans close to Trump. I'm sure that made no difference at all to the WSJ top brass who decided to make Lai their beacon for press freedom in HK, but kick Cheng to the curb for her press freedom activism.

Daisann @daisann.bsky.social · 22/12/2025
The WSJ has been probably the most vocal and consistent defender of Jimmy Lai and press freedom in HK. Yet they're now smearing a local reporter they let go because she refused to resign as the head of the Hong Kong Journalists Association-the front line organization defending press freedom in HK.

Americans see buildings in flames and think “tragic”. But what they should also be thinking is: this is the inevitable outcome of an authoritarian-run society. Cronyism and corruption, punishment for those who dare stand up and question—these are structures that will bring infernos home to you too

The irony is that the HK gov will use the tragedy to stop the use of bamboo scaffolding, which will lengthen project times, and make new construction in tight urban spaces noisier, more disruptive, and probably more dangerous. In NYC, where steel scaffolding is used, it stays up for years and years.
