“When you’re interested in science and dive into psychiatric research, your heart is broken. It looks convincing and persuasive and it’s written in very persuasive language. In reality, it’s replete with assumptions and bias, especially regarding theories about how psychiatric drugs work.”

7/ Real & Powerful Alternatives Exist: Metabolic therapies focus on nutrition, lifestyle, and addressing root causes. They can transform mental health and improve outcomes—even alongside medication—but are often ignored in conventional care.

6/ Why This Matters: Many doctors have limited training on the risks of psychiatric meds, safe tapering practices, or alternatives like metabolic therapies. Patients often don’t get the full picture and need to advocate for themselves.

5/ 4️⃣ Duration of Use: Is this meant to be short-term or lifelong? 5️⃣ Alternatives: Are there other approaches to explore? Yes, there are! But doctors often don’t know this. Even if meds are prescribed, addressing alternatives can still make a huge difference.

4/ 1️⃣ Mechanism of Action: How does the medication work in your brain and body? 2️⃣ Potential Benefits: What outcomes are expected, and how will success be measured? 3️⃣ Risks & Dependence: What are the short- and long-term risks, including withdrawal & dependency?

3/What Informed Consent for Psychiatric Medications Should Include (But Often Doesn’t): It’s not just about “take this pill.” There are key facts patients deserve to know.

2/ Ten years later, I now know what I should have asked. But how many families are derailed by treatments that worsen the issue? Had we been offered targeted nutrition or lifestyle therapies, it’s likely her depression could have resolved within a year —without her life being endangered.

1/ When my daughter was 16, she was prescribed fluoxetine for depression. She became suicidal—a known side effect of the medication—but this was treated as a worsening of her condition. None of these risks were discussed with us, and as her parent, I didn’t know what questions to ask.

Psychiatrist Dr. Georgia Ede recalls being taught that mental illness is ‘chronic, progressive, incurable.’ But there’s hope! New research shows that nutrition, like ketogenic diets, can improve brain health and transform lives. Your mind deserves the chance to heal. 🌱 #MentalHealth #MetabolicMind

It’s truly alarming and totally devastating. We are the most psychotropic prescribed population generationally yet our collective mental health continues to decline. So many innocent lives impacted. I’m heartbroken. Thank you for taking action and your campaign to raise awareness.

This is exactly what has happened to my adult daughter, although it was withdrawal from antipsychotic meds not AD’s (she tapered as instructed). Her GP is currently diagnosing her resulting tardive dyskinesia as functional neurological disorder. It’s truly exhausting trying to get help.

The model in mental health is changing. The era of "faulty brain chemistry" is over, the hypotheses debunked, the drugs needlessly dangerous. We're moving to a more compassionate understanding that bad things happen to people and they suffer emotionally and physically as a result

Instead of that psych drug, perhaps what you really needed was time off work, a person to care & listen, a quiet place to retreat, reflect, reassess & repair. Perhaps you needed us to treat you as worthy of a kinder world; of a social & human rather than a chemical response.

Yes we have an integrative medical doctor, and she has done some of those tests. She has been on nutritional supplements for many years and I had always thought they were the only thing that saw her feel any better. Unfortunately supplements were no match for the withdrawal from antipsychotic meds.

Sal @dagette.bsky.social · 30/12/2024
I wholeheartedly agree with you. This has been one of the ‘lessons’ we have learnt. We only found the resources afterwards while the DRs were scratching their heads, adding to the list of diagnoses they wanted to give. It was a dystopian reality where they didn’t know withdrawal existed.
110
Sal @dagette.bsky.social · 30/12/2024
Yes! I’m so pleased to hear how well this went for you Steven. My daughter followed prescriber’s guidance, resulting in injury. It was information we didn’t know we needed. Did you have a resource that helped? How did you come to learn this?

7/7 Could embracing nutritional psychiatry transform how we prevent and treat mental health conditions? Georgia Ede’s Change Your Diet, Change Your Mind is a thought-provoking call to action. Have you explored the connection between diet and mental health? What’s your experience? #metabolicmind
000
Sal @dagette.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
6/7 This perspective shifts the conversation on mental health. Instead of solely focusing on therapy or medication, Ede asks: what if the food on our plates is playing a bigger role than we realise?
100
Sal @dagette.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
5/7 Ede also explores how nutrient-dense, whole-food diets—particularly low-carb, ketogenic, or ancestral diets—can support brain health. By stabilising blood sugar and reducing inflammation, these diets can create the conditions for mental clarity and emotional stability.
100
Sal @dagette.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
4/7 A key idea in Ede’s work is that many mental health conditions may stem from the brain’s reaction to dietary triggers like refined carbohydrates, industrial seed oils, and even some plant-based foods. Addressing these could improve symptoms.
100
Sal @dagette.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
3/7 Her approach challenges the standard view that mental health conditions are primarily driven by genetics, brain chemistry, or life experiences. Instead, she argues that diet can significantly influence the brain’s biology, offering a powerful lever for change.
100
Sal @dagette.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
2/7 Ede highlights how modern diets—high in processed foods, sugar, and inflammatory oils—negatively impact brain function. She connects poor nutrition to neuroinflammation, hormonal imbalances, and oxidative stress, all of which can fuel mental health issues.
100
Sal @dagette.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
1/7 Georgia Ede’s Change Your Diet, Change Your Mind offers an alternative perspective on mental health. Ede argues that nutrition is a key, yet often overlooked, factor in conditions like anxiety, depression, ADHD, and more. Could our diet be as important as therapy or medication? Let’s explore.
110
Sal @dagette.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
3/ If biology is more dynamic than we thought, are we overemphasising psychological factors in mental health? Could a greater focus on biological interventions like diet, exercise, and metabolism lead to better outcomes across a range of conditions? Thoughts? #brainenergy #metabolicmind
000
Sal @dagette.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
2/ Traditionally, the biological component is seen as genetics—something fixed and out of our control. But Palmer highlights epigenetics and how metabolic health can influence whether genes are switched on or off, giving us levers of influence.
100
Sal @dagette.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
1/ Have we underestimated the biological component in the biopsychosocial model of mental health? Chris Palmer’s Brain Energy theory suggests metabolic and mitochondrial health play a key role. Could this change how we view conditions like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or OCD?
