It's Silent Movie Day! Did you know not all silent films were black and white? Color processes like Kinemacolor were shown as early as 1909, and film was tinted and colored by hand even earlier. Here are some examples of early silent films in color from the Library's National Screening Room!

A black and white macro image of a thin branch on a gingko tree. The branch runs diagonally from the top left to bottom right in the middle third of the frame. Focus is on the left side of the frame showing a cluster of four leaves (possibly a fifth behind them?) fanning out from their shared bud. Other new clusters of leaves are out of focus on the right side of the frame.

"Isn't that lovely? It's my favorite program-fifteen minutes of silence-and after that there's a half hour of quiet and then an interlude of lull. Why, did you know that there are almost as many kinds of stillness as there are sounds? But, sadly enough, no one pays any attention to them these days.”

AMN Reviews: Phill Niblock – BLK+LND / K&L for KL (2026; Sub Rosa)
A bass clarinet is a wonderful, magical thing. Phill Niblock approached acoustic instruments more as source material than as an end to themselves, piling on so many tracks and clashing microtones that the end result sometimes obscured the origin entirely. But not even Niblock could fully conceal the timbre of the bass clarinet. Or, just maybe, he didn't want to. Niblock died in 2024, not long after completing the two pieces on…

Captured through the refined visual lens of photographer Dirk Ercken, this pristine study of a karesansui (dry landscape garden) isolates the essential elements of Japanese Zen spatial design into a fluid, abstract composition.
Sweeping ridges of fine, pale gravel are combed into gentle, sinuous samon (sand ripples), mimicking the rhythmic movement of water around three dark, smoothly weathered river stones. The low-angled side lighting grazes the raised contours of the raked furrows, casting soft, elongated shadows that accentuate the tactile grain of the granules against the dense, matte surfaces of the embedded stones. By paring away extraneous greenery and external architecture, Ercken’s macro-perspective focuses entirely on the quiet dialogue between solid mass and dynamic negative space (yohaku).

Rooted in the Zen Buddhist monastic traditions that flourished during the Muromachi period (1336–1573), karesansui gardens utilize stone and gravel to construct expansive visual cosmoses within compact quarters. In this visual theology, the raked sand represents the vastness of the ocean, rivers, or the primordial void, while the unmoving stones evoke eternal mountain peaks, sacred islands, or the grounded mind amidst the shifting currents of life. The daily ritual of combing these linear grooves with a wooden rake is far more than routine maintenance; it is an act of moving meditation, requiring steady physical focus and breath control to execute uninterrupted, flowing curves that mirror the gardener’s internal state of harmony.

The compositional arrangement of the three stones exemplifies the fundamental spatial principle of ma—the sacred, meaningful intervals between forms that allow each object to exist in balanced tension. Positioned in an asymmetrical, gentle diagonal across the frame, the stones act as visual anchors within the undulating tide of sand, inviting the eye to follow the rhythmic crests before settling into quiet reflection.
