Watching "Kraven the Hunter", and it's remarkable. There is a 30 minute flashback 5 minutes into the film. I genuinely forgot that Aaron Taylor-Johnson was the protagonist.

You might not think AI speeds up game development, but there have been 1,992 sequels to Expedition 33 in the time it took to make the first 32 games, and the next one is coming out imminently. (This is a niche joke, I realise, but on the plus side it's also not a very _good_ joke.)

(To which the answers are: "I guess?; I guess?; Probably, but do not sniff her; I have no idea how that is measured; She would not need to appeal, but her husband will later be denied an appeal of his conviction for perjury, and; Mate, come on, that's not cool, she can hear you, you're being weird.)

A good time to remember Justice Caulfield's classic: "Remember Mary Archer in the witness-box. Your vision of her probably will never disappear. Has she elegance? Has she fragrance? Would she have, without the strain of this trial, radiance? How would she appeal? Has she had a happy married life?"

(Nigel Farage can be confident that he will be the leader of a political party, just not necessarily which one.)

Daniel Nye Griffiths @d-nye-griffiths.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
To be fair, at this point the leader of any British political party (except Nigel Farage) might struggle to imagine that they or anyone should be planning for a world in which they are still making decisions as the leader of a political party in four years' time.

One reason for that is that the Royal Mail has actually returned to underlying profitability under private ownership - which feels like a success story, but obviously raises the question of whether mail can/should be optimised for profit. Which is an interesting question!

Daniel Nye Griffiths @d-nye-griffiths.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
The general feeling in UK polling is that the Royal Mail _should_ be nationalised - support for public ownership is consistently about 75%, but it doesn't seem like a fight that anyone in or around government actually wants to have.

Daniel Nye Griffiths @d-nye-griffiths.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Not the most original insight, but the Royal Mail is one of the more reliable post-privatisation services up until the moment that literally anything goes wrong, at which point it becomes perhaps the worst and least accountable service this side of the water companies.

The RNLI is the closest you will ever get to actual Batman. When rescue is visibly, viscerally, obviously impossible; when the water is a smothering, thundering black wall and the wind is screaming straight from Hell; when you are absolutely going to die: someone’s hand pulls you out and you don’t.

(I mean, I think Eurovision can produce _fun_, if not _great_ songs. I think it is a massive waste of time to discuss this in Parliament given that literally everything else is happening. And "Remember You're a Womble" absolutely slaps, as does "The Hunting of the Snark", as does "Bright Eyes"...)

To be fair to the designers, it's more portable than you think. Two dudes and a tray is ideal, but you can do it with one dude and a neck sling, as long as he's got the red buttons on his jacket.

Stating the obvious, but people with roots in Bhārat and the surrounding areas - and people with roots in the nations of the native people of what is now the United States of America - were both _assigned_ the English term "Indian" - this riff is enabled by, and a comment on, that shared imposition.
000
Daniel Nye Griffiths @d-nye-griffiths.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I think where things get more complex is that this slogan - usually found advertising British Indian-owned construction businesses, FWIW - is a wordplay by one group of people who have experienced racial discrimination and colonial exploitation, playing on tropes and stereotypes relating to another.

Daniel Nye Griffiths @d-nye-griffiths.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Well.. the idea that the old American children's game of "cowboys and Indians", and the broader generic and narrative tropes that it, and the "Western" as a topos as a whole, often played off and reinscribed are offensive and outdated is not a controversial or novel one.

I don't think of Nina McConiger as someone with an un-nuanced view of race and colonialism. For sure, her intention is in part to explore the complexities and impacts of perceptions of race, from the perspective of Indians (i.e people whose heritage is from the Indian subcontinent) living in the US.

Daniel Nye Griffiths @d-nye-griffiths.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
This struck me because I recently came across a collection of short stories by the Irish/Indian-American writer Nina McConiger, whose title also involves a play on the fact that Native Americans and people with roots in the subcontinent of India have been called by the same name by English speakers.

Daniel Nye Griffiths @d-nye-griffiths.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I think I understand your position - that any use of a phrase that connotes or references the phrase "cowboys and Indians" is inescapably racist, because that phrase references a long history of persecution of Native Americans in the land now called the United States.
