On this point, here’s a selected quote from the referee report for my edited collection with @d-j-frost.bsky.social, ‘In Solidarity, Under Suspicion’, the third volume in our series on the history of the British far left. Recognising the contribution of our volumes to the historiography.
"Like the previous volumes, this one too will become an indispensable starting point for anyone wanting to research the far left (broadly defined) and an exceptionally useful overview for readers who simply want to learn more about that part of the political spectrum. I don't know of any other volumes quite like this emerging series and it therefore remains exceptionally valuable."

In my new piece for the #MEIBlog, I draw on the work of Paolo Gerbaudo (@paologerbaudo.bsky.social), Alfie Steer (@alfiesteer.bsky.social) and the late Jonathan Dean to discuss Your Party's tumultuous first year.
"Long Read: A year of Your Party

A year after Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana announced the formation of a new left-wing political party, Dr Daniel Frost explores Your Party's tumultuous formation and what its first year tells us about the future of “the Left” in Britain.

On 24 July 2025, Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana announced the formation of a new left-wing political party, building upon the election of five independent MPs – including Corbyn – in the 2024 general election. Sultana had left the Labour Party at the start of the month; the new party was announced a year and a day after she lost the Labour whip for voting to end the two-child benefit cap."

Bottom right: an image of Jeremy Corbyn speaking at a Palestine solidarity demonstration.

Interesting to discover that my short @redpeppermag.bsky.social "Keywords" piece on Rudi Dutschke and Raymond Williams has been cited in an academic paper on R.W. Fassbinder..! www.mdpi.com/2076-0752/15...
The citation and abstract of the paper."This same logic pervades the more hopeful Eight Hours, which depicts the steady radicalization of workers through their confrontation with day-to-day problems—rent prices, impossible quotas, domestic violence, etc. The approach is inspired by Dutschke’s conception of revolution as a “long march through the institutions”—a phrase whose radical origins in the sociologist’s engagement with Mao Zedong and Che Guevara have often been obscured (Frost 2022).3 Eight Hours’ radical politics aligns Dutschke’s phrase with Antonio Gramsci’s “war of position”, which, as Daniel Frost points out, is vulnerable to charges of gradualism (Frost 2022). The sunny tone of Eight Hours may lead viewers to suspect the show is striking a similar compromise even as the series highlights the phrase’s militant potential.

As Sabrina Huck argues, Dutschke’s “long march is not a reformist strategy precisely because its end goal is the abolition of the existing structures and the institutions that reproduce them. It is a process of working politically from within, but by pushing boundaries through agitation not negotiation…” (Huck 2020). Eight Hours works through a similar method by bringing radical politics to the institution of television, the citadel of bourgeois values."

My grandad has worked on a family history for a long time, so I thought I'd search the British Newspaper Archive – starting with his father, Frank Ernest Frost, a grocer in West Croydon. This article is from 1920, when he was 17. Despite selling the shop in the 1970s, their sign is still there:
Google Street View image from March 2025, showing a shop with a sign that reads "F.E. Frost" and "Family Grocer".Article from the Mitcham Advertiser (4 June 1920) mentioning that F.E. Frost has passed his first year Institute of Certificated Grocers examination.

Have to say that even *I* think this is a bit of a tenuous excuse to talk about Croydon www.theguardian.com/football/202...
Some very good things have come from Croydon, the often overlooked town in south London. The film director David Lean was born there, as was Roy Hodgson, the actor Peggy Ashcroft and the sexologist Havelock Ellis. Amy Winehouse studied in Croydon. The Bill and Peep Show were filmed there, as was the title sequence of the 1980s sitcom Terry and June. For a long time it was a centre of brewing and leather production. It was on a suburban driveway there that Pickles found the Jules Rimet trophy after it had been stolen in 1966. And on Wednesday Croydon proved the crucible of Colombia’s victory over Uzbekistan.

Lovely to read this generous and thoughtful review of *In Solidarity, Under Suspicion*, by Clive Hedges for The Left Lane! theleftlane.media/learning-les... @evansmithhist.bsky.social @manchesterup.bsky.social
As Frost notes in the final chapter of this fascinating and informative text, Corbynism briefly promised such a broad-church-leftism under the auspices of his leadership of the Labour Party, a promise that hit the wall of not just the establishment but, probably more crucially, the right-wing Labour establishment, which has been busy trying to bury it ever since. There are lessons, however, in this collection regarding what should be the centrality of the pursuit of democracy and solidarity for the left in trying to do this.
