That musical moment in time certainly led to some thoughts of “how come I made it through?”. Not survivors guilt per se, but an appreciation of how random it all was. Heroin was not my alteration of choice which may have helped, but I know there were a lot of Bad Ends out there regardless for me.

My life was pretty chaotic back then too, of course. So there was no way of keeping up. I hope Carmen lived. Not everyone in that circle did, and her life was riskier than some. Plus: Vancouver in the 90s. So much heroin. So. Much. Heroin. If she lived, I hope she found a happy life somewhere.

And we would talk for hours. Carmen wasn’t in my life long, she was transient in many senses of the word. She made her living through sex work, and eventually saved up enough that she and her girlfriend could move on a few months later.

I had fixed up my old Magna and rode over to where she was crashing in Vancouver for a while. Carmen wasn’t her real name, never knew it, never needed to. Scrappy cute little lass. We had met at a club night. She was all flyaway hair and flyaway thoughts, fishnets and “fight me”, and we bonded fast.

“L’ouiseau de Paradis” directed by Marcel Camus from 1962. French new wave director but set in Cambodia with Cambodian actors. She knows I have a good record with finding strange media so she asked if I could…and I came up empty. Never got a North American release of any kind as far as I could tell.

So one of my wife’s best friends is Cambodian-Canadian. She doesn’t remember Cambodia, her first memories are of the refugee camps in Thailand.
