Santa Fe, NM -
What began as a relaxing vacation through New Mexico's celebrated culinary landscape reportedly descended into confusion and mild panic this week after Kentucky resident Emily Dawson discovered that nearly every meal recommendation from locals included the phrase, "Yeah, but get green chile on it."

According to witnesses, Dawson's ordeal started innocently enough when she asked a group of friends where she could find a good breakfast.

"I was expecting maybe pancakes or eggs," Dawson said while staring blankly at a menu containing 47 separate green chile related items. "Instead, they spent twenty minutes debating which restaurant had the best green chile. Nobody ever actually answered my question."

Sources confirmed the confusion intensified when Dawson ordered a cheeseburger and was immediately asked, "Red or green?"

"I said neither," Dawson recalled. "The waiter just stood there silently like I had informed him I don't believe in gravity."

Local residents admitted they struggle to identify foods that cannot be improved by the addition of green chile.

"Well obviously it belongs on burritos, burgers, pizza, fries, eggs, enchiladas, hot dogs, steaks, sandwiches, and mashed potatoes," said Albuquerque resident Mark Chavez. "And then there's all the controversial stuff."

When asked what qualified as controversial, Chavez listed green chile ice cream, green chile beer, green chile chocolate, green chile peanut brittle, green chile apple pie, and green chile cocktails before adding, "Actually most of those are pretty good."

The situation reportedly reached a breaking point during a family dinner when Dawson ordered a side salad.

"The lady across the table leaned over and whispered, 'You know they'd put green chile on that if you asked,'" said Dawson. "She said it the way someone might reveal the location of hidden treasure."

Experts say this phenomenon is common among visitors unfamiliar with New Mexico's unique food culture.

A four-panel comic. The first panel shows an arrow pointing down at a happy-looking nuthatch bird, and a caption: This is a nuthatch. The caption says "It's called a nuthatch because... wait no" and we see the nuthatch standing on a pile of nuts, tucking them under it. The caption says "That's not... wait" and the nuthatch is roosting comfortably on the pile of nuts. The caption says NO. And we see that one of the nuts has hatched and some walnut meat is flying happily into the air on little wings.
