This deep dive on XKCD's famous comic on all modern infrastructure manages to be important, fascinating and more than a little bit scary all at the same time. Worth a scroll. And massive kudos to Germany for their sovereign tech fund, all countries should have one sheets.works/data-viz/hol...

Welcome! Hope you enjoy the state! When I was legally getting my name changed, we had several trans peeps that also were having their name changed. I can't tell you how warm, professional, and polite the judge was. Afterwards when he called them by their name, they positively glowed.

Unideally, you can have a little bit of rad syrup, as a treat.

Depends on the environment that it would be processed/acquired in and how much volume. Ideally it would liquid waste that could be diluted down with other low level rad waste, drummed, and shipped. In small quantities you could combine it with wastelock, baggie it, and dispose of it.

While good news, I hope that they're able to keep somewhat in the realm of reasonable cost - the new-builds so far have been absurd. (800k for a condo, $2800-4500) for regular rental apartments. 😵‍💫 We desperately need lower-income housing for non-LANL workers!

The lack of public use infrastructure, cities let alone rural areas, is sorely needed. Colorado has some of the best/highest density that I've come across.

I think the onus should definitely shift from private to publicly available bathrooms - of which there is a dire shortage. In areas with high homeless and drug use rates, open bathrooms are an invitation for disaster. No retail wage-slaves should be made to clean up needles, vomit, or bodily fluids

The push to clear nuclear power’s waste-disposal hurdle
The technical issues have mostly been solved, but the long-term potential peril of radioactive material has made it difficult to find politically acceptable sites.

They're reliable (ish) due to their robust construction and known maintenance needs. They are an old, ineffienct design that have served their purpose. With the greater diversity in airframes (and weight), we need the newer electronic systems. We'll get through the teething issues in time.

Echoing @navyhelo.bsky.social - they definitely used a lot of high-purity water! Modern CVNs use their produced steam to power the pistons to launch aircraft. With the new EMALS system they would be powered electrically off the turbine generators.
