An incredibly important, immaculately researched, & beautifully written book by the best there is. Truly a must-read for anyone who cares about school choice, education policy, and the ongoing barriers that impede all children’s fair access to supportive & enriching schools.

Pre-service teachers without this background felt significantly less equipped and less confident to do so. We offer suggestions for ways that TEPs can better incorporate opportunities to build knowledge of immigration, its impacts, and how to engage and educate children of immigrant backgrounds.

Teacher candidates of immigrant backgrounds themselves relied on their own personal experiences to develop orientations and awareness about how to support immigrant-origin students in their role as educator, particularly during times of heightened anxiety around immigration enforcement.

Yet, they reported very limited discussion of them in their courses or training. Instead, teacher candidates described near exclusive emphasis on facilitating English language development among emergent multilingual learners as the core area of focus related to immigrant-origin students.

We also asked how important they thought it was to be informed about these topics and how prepared they felt to educate children of immigrant backgrounds. We found that both teacher candidates and faculty in the TEP believed it was very important for educators to be familiar with these issues.

We drew from our earlier work (www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...) to see if teacher candidates were exposed to information about (1) immigration policies; (2) undocumented status; (3) language brokering; and (4) migration-related trauma in their pre-service training.

We surveyed and interviewed teacher candidates at one TEP in California to find out how much they learned about immigration and its influences on young people in their pre-service training. Specifically, we explored whether certain domains of knowledge were covered and how.
