Several of CK Walker's shorter works would make great episodes of a horror anthology series.

Since I haven't seen it mentioned yet, the EC Comics adaptation is free to read online, thanks to someone's livejournal. dochermes.livejournal.com/405625.html

"There Will Come Soft Rains"
I first read this story when I was very young, and constantly plowing through stuff that went way over my head. I didn't get it at all, to be honest. Years later, I picked up a copy of THE MARTIAN CHR...

The argument usually boils down to “this person, who seems in every aspect to be a Nazi, cannot be a Nazi, because Nazis are socially unacceptable, and he is being accepted, for example by Me.”

According to my 10 minute internet search, the other Japonicas are either endemic to Japan, endemic to a larger area of East Asia including Japan, or are larger groups named after a type species that is one of those things. It all checks out, boss

“Japonica” as a scientific name is also applied to at least three other plants plus I think some butterflies and apparently nematodes? BRB gonna find out which of them are even remotely associated with Japan

We've all probably heard "Americans are estranged from where their food comes from", and that can be extended to its logical conclusion "...and capitalism needs to keep it that way". A staggering amount of profit rests on that estrangement.

it's wild approaching film from a horror angle specifically, because everyone else is all "cinema is dead. everything is remakes of remakes and all is ashes" and then you talk to a horror fan and they say "yeah i don't know how I'm gonna have time to see the 17 original films that opened this week"

there's a post floating around claiming that the books don't want to deal with the less cinematic parts of a medieval-esque world, which may be fair criticism on its own, but the examples they chose were "like toilets or dysentery", both things that actually feature quite prominently in the plot

Assembling all the ephemera for a wedding (save-the-dates, invitations, ceremony program, place cards, thank-you stationery, informative signage) while dodging all of these fonts was the typographical equivalent of an American Ninja Warrior obstacle course.

Basic fact-checking skills are praxis actually. You should know how to reverse image search. You should know how to confirm a fishy news story. You should learn the hallmarks of artificially-generated fake photos. You cannot fight fascism without this

People will tell you it's useless to learn to identify AI image "tells" as the software will keep improving. Considering that images with obvious tells are still being circulated as real by well-meaning people who just don't know what to look for, I really don't think that's true.

It’s true, I try to never judge movies I fall asleep while watching, because it says more about my ability to sleep through anything than about the quality of the movie.

You might say "well *I* don't know anyone in Gaza", but you might already follow someone who has family or a friend or acquaintance there! If you want to help, go have a conversation with them. They can point you to people or groups who need donations. It's deadly to assume we're all isolated.

Crypt-Keeper Wasp @cryptkeeperwasp.bsky.social · 12/04/2026
This "but how to find real people in need amongst the scammers?" conversation relies on the unquestioned assumption that no one "we" know could possibly have personal ties to anyone in Gaza and thus we're all flying blind in regards to finding real people to help. Go speak with another human!

I know the mass media keeps collective memory short for a reason, but anyone remember fuckin. 2015-2016, even? There was a big upswell of college protests, mostly against institutional racism, and the news was constantly smug and condescending and treated them like spoiled children.

I see someone already recommended another Due for this list, and I haven’t read that one, but Reformatory checks all of these boxes at least partially (a different type of ghost, and the structure is multi-POV but not “weird”). It’s also fantastic

if we're complaining about shelf sorting methods, I would like to complain that my local library's default of sorting books into General Fiction, Mystery, and SFF means that the horror fiction is equally likely to be in any of these places. I might as well go consult a magic 8 ball

butter has many uses, but being brought out next to fresh, steaming bread at the beginning of a meal, to say "welcome and enjoy this food we are sharing together"? that belongs to her (olive oil)

Crypt-Keeper Wasp @cryptkeeperwasp.bsky.social · 04/04/2026
I was preparing this screed on how butter on bread/toast/rolls is inferior in every way to olive oil, and that bread dipped in olive oil is one of the greatest human achievements, but I gave up halfway through because I was craving some bread dipped in olive oil

it makes your support sound conditional. it's hard enough as it is to stand up bigots and abusers who are shielded by the quality of their art without you all saying barefacedly "it is easy for me to stand up to this bigot due to her low quality art"

That New Yorker article about the Mutter and what could be very generously called its provenance issues was eye-opening.
She oversaw an audit of the collection, the first in more than eighty years. "I had the expectation that we would find that maybe two or three per cent of the collection had been given to us with consent," she told me. "But we're finding it's much, much less than that."

Crypt-Keeper Wasp @cryptkeeperwasp.bsky.social · 04/03/2026
There's no excuse for someone who's supposed to be representing millions of New Yorkers to say that the problem is "not enough Christianity" (though if NY lost senators every time one did something that should be disqualifying, we'd have nothing but a smoking crater where Schumer used to be).

One of those books where the first monster introduction made me sit up and pay attention. When river creature was shown as some sort of bizarre salamander thing rather than a standard fangly monster I knew I was in good hands.
