Today, 8 September, officially marks 320 years of the modern ghost story. On 8 September 1706, The Apparition of Mrs Veal, widely attributed to Daniel Defoe, was published. City of Ghosts | 3 October | St Gregory's, Canterbury Tickets: www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/city-of-gh...

The Haunted Archive on tour! Well, not quite! Mark will be attending City of Ghosts - The Canterbury Ghost Story Festival on 3 October to talk about The Haunted Archive. And as a treat for attendees - the 'Oh, Whistle' manuscript will be on display too. Check out the event here: bit.ly/3SzAyWD

Gothic cathedral made of skulls and skeletons beneath a full moon and blood-red, clouded sky with circling black birds, paired with the title "City of Ghosts — The Canterbury Ghost Story Festival".

I just want to congratulate @crumpledlinenpress.com on nailing the most frustrating part of buying beautiful books - the packaging meant this M R James book arrived absolutely mint.

Arrived yesterday and in perfect condition despite being posted through the letterbox. A beautiful book from @crumpledlinenpress.com Oh, Whistle And I'll Come To You, My Lad. Annotated manuscripts of MR James. I shall enjoy reading this, but only during the daylight hours.

Front cover, dust jacket of the annotated ghost story manuscripts of MR James. Vol one is 'Oh, Whistle and I'll come to you, my lad'.
The dust jacket pictures a man wearing a flat cap taking a walk along a desolate beach. Some distance behind is the ominously silhouetted figure of another person.

Title page, numbered (124 of 300) and sighed.

Page spread. On the left is a black and white illustration.
A book covered desktop, one of the books is open. Above which are a pair of hands that are holding a bone whistle.

Page spread.
On the right, a facsimile of James' manuscript.
On the left, the contents of the manuscript page in more legible print.

90 years ago today, M.R. James passed away in the Lodge at Eton College. It is as the father of the modern ghost story that we chiefly remember and admire him. We hope The Haunted Archive, in some small way, commemorates his lasting contribution to the genre. #MRJames #ghoststories

Last week, a gentleman returned this rather dilapidated copy of this famous book to us after 50 years. He had found it in his attic! Presumably this means there is a pristine copy somewhere in our libraries....

A picture of a rather dilapidated copy of "The picture of Dorian Gray" There is visible water damage to the cover and the plastic cover is yellowing. Obviously, not evident from the picture but there is a truly foul musty smell emanating from it!
