This is part of the reason Loyola's been running Journalist Law School (4 days, basic legal frameworks, time for questions) for 20 years now. And I see we've got plenty more work to do.

The paragraph before seems equally detached from events—this would-be stumper of a question about the Court overturning executive orders is a lot less of a stumper when the executive orders keep violating laws passed by Congress!
Screenshot of text:

The Supreme Court’s self-granted power to declare executive actions unconstitutional hardly appears in Bowie and Renan’s history. But [highlighting begins] it’s hard to see how this power could be legitimate by their logic. If the Court is trammelling democracy when it overturns acts of Congress, isn’t it doing the same when it overrules a popularly elected President? [highlighting ends]

There was a Christian ethic interwoven into it as well — runners would wear wristbands with an Isaiah verse (“they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint”) or post that on social media — to some athletics was seen as a reaffirmation of that faith I’ll check out the book!

I was on an athletic team at a 6A school in Texas (xc / track and field) — every aspect of our performance was moralized this way and especially by parents — we’d be bent at the waist seeing stars in the heat and there’d still be some parent insisting to our coach that he wasn’t pushing us enough

Have had no reason to post about them here — but I read the Staten Island Advance (where I’ve lived ~2 years now) and have come to appreciate how they keep me informed on every move Pete Davidson and Colin Jost make on their ferry scheme

Reminds me: once consulted AI on how to supplement my nutrition on a week when I had multiple 10km+ runs planned — I don’t have a screenshot but remember it gave me the same “fats are hard to digest” wisdom and recommended I eat 16-18 tablespoons (i.e. a CUP) of honey to restore my glycogen

Meridith Kohut has a talent for portraiture — she’s covered many Texas and Latin America stories for the NYT — but the portraits in this article reminded me of those from this piece on SR-17018 and kratom addiction from May (linked below)

One of the (many) problems with chest-pounding sloganeering like "maximum lethality, not tepid legality" is that you're less likely to get any benefit of the doubt when you're accused of attacking civilians.

Really great work. I could read an entire book on the story you open with in the introduction — court records and FOIAs are onerous terrain to begin with, let alone when you’re trying to take on something like Attica

As a court, we’ve done a great job not constraining the president. If only we had some big, ugly, hugely unpopular monument to commemorate it with.

Oh shit, declarations? Well why didn't you say so.
Nor is that all. The government has also presented declarations from the Director of National Intelligence, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Director of the United States Secret Service, and the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Homeland Security, and the Secretary of the Army, among others, attesting to national security and other harms that would likely arise from enjoining a "sin-gle, coherent" project that cannot be readily cleaved into distinct below- and above-ground pieces.

Nice HUS-1 (“Little Didia”) — didn’t find out much about her online — but tonight I learned that the Sikorsky H-34’s that appeared in Full Metal Jacket were actually civilian-model Westland Wessex helicopters (a British under licence development of the Sikorsky) that Kubrick had painted green

I read “In Search of Lost Time” during the pandemic. When I finished it, I put the entire hardcover set in a backpack, and used it as a makeshift weighted vest while running up and down the staircase in my building. The latter was easily a more rewarding use of that particular roman fleuve.
