This is part of the reason Loyola's been running Journalist Law School (4 days, basic legal frameworks, time for questions) for 20 years now. And I see we've got plenty more work to do.

The paragraph before seems equally detached from events—this would-be stumper of a question about the Court overturning executive orders is a lot less of a stumper when the executive orders keep violating laws passed by Congress!
Screenshot of text:

The Supreme Court’s self-granted power to declare executive actions unconstitutional hardly appears in Bowie and Renan’s history. But [highlighting begins] it’s hard to see how this power could be legitimate by their logic. If the Court is trammelling democracy when it overturns acts of Congress, isn’t it doing the same when it overrules a popularly elected President? [highlighting ends]

Hiked from Yonkers north to Dobbs Ferry — the Hudson Valley Museum (a few minutes outside town) and the Untermyer Gardens (a few more) are worth a visit

One of the (many) problems with chest-pounding sloganeering like "maximum lethality, not tepid legality" is that you're less likely to get any benefit of the doubt when you're accused of attacking civilians.

Traded a $1 bill for a copy of Victor S. Navasky’s Naming Names the other afternoon — already well worth it to read passages like these where the Sixth Amendment remained perfectly fine and intact

As a court, we’ve done a great job not constraining the president. If only we had some big, ugly, hugely unpopular monument to commemorate it with.

Hiked upstate this afternoon — Cold Spring to Beacon on the Breakneck Ridge — rocks up high and mushrooms down low

Oh shit, declarations? Well why didn't you say so.
Nor is that all. The government has also presented declarations from the Director of National Intelligence, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Director of the United States Secret Service, and the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Homeland Security, and the Secretary of the Army, among others, attesting to national security and other harms that would likely arise from enjoining a "sin-gle, coherent" project that cannot be readily cleaved into distinct below- and above-ground pieces.

They want us to move away from ownership to electronic access only, so they are forcing us into it with unsustainable price increases. Then they can easily dictate what we do with the online, access only versions. 3/5

The gig is up in the very first sentence of the Supreme Court's per curiam opinion on the Trump ballroom (emphasis added): "In October 2025, the *federal government* started a project to replace the East Wing of the White House." They've collapsed the legislative branch into the unitary executive.

Up late reading @historianheather.bsky.social’s Blood in the Water on the Attica prison uprising in upstate New York in 1971 and was compelled to tab this scene — incisive writing

I read “In Search of Lost Time” during the pandemic. When I finished it, I put the entire hardcover set in a backpack, and used it as a makeshift weighted vest while running up and down the staircase in my building. The latter was easily a more rewarding use of that particular roman fleuve.
