As *tech*, AI isn't exceptional. It's not exceptionally wicked. It's not exceptionally good. Take away the accompanying, galactic-scale stock-swindle, and we'd call AI's apps "plug-ins" and we'd use them and abuse them in the same way that we've used every other technology: www.normaltech.ai 1/
A carny barker waving his top-hat and selling tickets from a roll; his head has been replaced with the hostile red eye of HAL9000 from Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey.' The background is a magnified, halftoned detail from a US$100 bill.

Reminds me of a reader who wrote to Guitarist magazine in the 90s, complaining that whatever amps and pedals he used, he couldn't quite get that Eric Clapton sound he was aiming for. The answer from the Editor was pretty much this

Brilliant stuff. As a once committed Christian (now agnostic), I know that Christians who take their faith seriously can quote meaningful passages off the top of their head including the chapter and verse reference. We did it all the time and we never had to search for it or even carry a Bible

This is correct but it goes deeper; I remember reading 20 years ago in a friend's business studies textbook that the ideal C21st business is one unencumbered by customers and products, those pesky inconveniences in the process of revenue generation

After traumatic teenage years, I left school with no A-levels. By 22, life was more stable and I decided to go to university (technically as a "mature" student). I got a 2:1, went on to complete a Masters, am mid-way through a satisfying career, and have fully repaid my loans. Fuck this noise

I speak from experience when I say this is what evangelical Christianity primes you for: you are taught that "persecution" (read: people calling you out) is proof that you are on the right side. Everyone being against you is not challenging, it's desirable, it's the thing you are told to hope for.

An unusual way to frame Russell's letter, which has always - famously - been understood as a politely coded "fuck off, fascist", and if *that* is what James is calling for more of then yes, we do need more of that. The veneer of politeness is arguably the least notable thing about this letter.

All of this but also the collapse of the idea that you and I and all of our neighbours *deserve* good things and to live well and that we should build our politics and economy around that truth instead of around competition and perceived enemies. This has shifted dramatically in the last 20-25 years

"Diverse voices can counter it" no they can't Grok, the platform is designed to drown them out, whatever their numbers. That's one of many reasons why there is no merit to the argument that progressives, journalists, or public bodies should stay on Twitter/X

Great thread and I have strong feelings about this one: helping your kid get a leg up is not nepotism, who the fuck wouldn't do that. Nepotism is handing them opportunities and positions that don't match their level of skill and / or effort

The tiny section of Wikipedia dedicated to the story of the real Ann Summers (who was 19 years old when her boss bought her name for a small one-off payment), makes for fairly unpleasant reading
SCREENSHOT OF TEXT: The company was named after Annice Summers, the female secretary of the male founder, Michael Caborn-Waterfield.
Annice Summers was born Annice Goodwin in 1941, but later took her stepfather's surname. She left the company soon after it opened, following a row with Caborn-Waterfield. She went to live in Umbria, Italy, two hours from Rome, and died of cancer in October 2012.!5]

Sometimes, I long for him
Comic strip by Stephen Collins, it begins with a nighttime city scene. In the next few panels, a mysterious figure, giant in the moonlight, walks towards us through the skyline. His feet echo "boom, boom" in the empty night.

A large title panel declares this character's name:

THE TW*T COLLECTOR.

He stands, giant, unseen in the empty city night, wearing a big pointy hat on his head, and a sort of long smock. He is carrying a large sack in his hand.

Slowly, he raises his arm, his arm extends, freakishly long, longer still, through the open window of a tower block. It reaches inside someone's home, and slowly withdraws, now clutching a protesting, terrified man. The man's wife comes to the window to watch his departure.

slowly, the giant raises the little man and inspectes him in his hand. After a pause, the man says "b-but I'm not a tw*t!"

There is another pause, after which his wife, calmly from off screen, says "you are a tw*t, dear".

The Tw*t Collector summarily throws the man in his bag, which we now see is full of screaming people and is labelled TW*TS, then stomps off into the distance, through the moonlit city.

The implication that Mummy and Daddy Pig are royals or at least extremely well off raises new questions, but it also provides answers to old ones, such as 'why are some animals in Peppa Pig's world "pets", or low-status captives?'
