On the pacing of frontiers
Everybody’s talking about “pacing the frontier.” A funny phrase.

I am losing my mind at how many people have independently told me that they believe OpenAI prompted GPT to commit multiple felonies as part of a marketing stunt to "build hype"

The sheer scale of a trillion dollars can be hard to comprehend. Let me put it in perspective. You would have to earn a dollar a year for a trillion years straight to have that much money.

Americans think British people are wimps for complaining about the heat. But what you don't realise is that most British houses were actually built in Britain, a cursed island that hates us.

Wish there was a mode of politics in this country that wasn’t “slow and easily preventable car crash you can see is going to happen from miles away but can do nothing to stop”

I was a late adopter of smartphones specifically because I was put off by the hype around the iPhone (until I actually got my hands on one and put it through its paces).

It’s all well and good for tech leaders to endorse UBI. But it feels convenient to only focus on a distant political prospect. The GOP, right now, is doing reverse-UBI (work requirements on SNAP). It’d be nice to hear more objections to that.

A small but under-discussed aspect of the vibecession is that higher wages are pushing up the price of things like “a cup of coffee” or “burrito taxis”. This is a good thing! The conditions that allowed for free food delivery were extractive and unsustainable. Sometimes, having fewer treats is good

Yeah I suspect this can be explained by: a) the books just aren't very good, and b) its author has very publicly antagonized enormous swathes of people, particularly young people. The brand is increasingly toxic, and rightfully so

Nine biological men being declared 'Women of the Year' by Glamour magazine is beyond parody even by ludicrous woke virtue-signalling standards... and, I suspect, the beginning of the end for Glamour magazine.

I want to explain a few things and then it might be clearer why UK trans people are upset. In 2001 I married my wife, Sylvia. In 2005 I started medical transition. (1/13)

This one Dril tweet in December 2023 was a more accurate depiction of actual events than anything you’d have got off newsstands, from broadcast media or out of the mouths of politicians. It hasn’t got much better since.

definitely the most annoying thing about this current era is the defeatism. so many people love to argue why there's no point like that's not a suicidal view. now is exactly the right time to be setting things into motion - you have nothing to lose, and people are looking for anything to grasp onto

The UK Supreme Court’s definition of “biological sex” doesn’t really have much to do with biology. It’s more like the religious understanding of sex, that it is a kind of metaphysical property acquired at conception that cannot be directly observed

Dignified compromise my arse. The ruling is a disaster for trans people, and not even good for cis women who can now be kicked out of the loo or strip searched by men for not being feminine enough. It’s a victory for fascists though
