I think there are some wealth taxes that are probably worth investigating, like a land value tax. But as a vehicle for wealth redistribution, they seem pretty bad. And we already have alternatives that we know are effective.

It’s impossible to have a conversation about this because everyone assumes you are shilling for billionaires, for some reason. Conflating “wealth taxes” and “taxing wealthy people”

I feel like gay people have figured all of this out already. Maybe once your relationship is already taboo, it becomes easier to conceptualise the actual type of relationship that makes you happy. (Which for many gay people does end up being monogamy, fwiw)

I understand that people want to push back against "AI psychosis". But is this really a problem for 99% of the population? Does *anyone* using the industry term "chain of thought" literally believe that the LLM is a little guy who lives in the GPU?

I think most people have no idea how to prompt for it, partly because they don't have the vocabulary to describe different art styles, and partly because it's not obvious how to style an image using just a text prompt. I think you see the same thing with AI-written documents.

Yeah this is my feeling too. I'm not thrilled how much overlap there is between OpenAI/Anthropic/AISIs/independent AI safety orgs, but what is the alternative? There are probably less than 1000 people globally who are qualified to lead an audit.

I'm confused what you mean by "capabilities". To me, solving these problems is evidence of capabilities. I think it's a mistake to focus on a binary outcome like extinction. The point is: as models become more capable, they are causing more damage, e.g. cybersecurity and mathematics.

This is “faking the moon landing” levels of denial. But even if it’s true that OpenAI and Anthropic are training on mathematician input, it’s still crazy how many mathematical breakthroughs they are making, in a short space of time. (Assuming the rumours are true.)

What do you think "Alignment Science lead" means?

crisis-averted.bsky.social @crisis-averted.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
He's an alignment scientist. Anthropic runs the largest and most advanced alignment lab in the world. He presumably doesn't work on improving the model's capabilities.

There's plenty of evidence that the models are rapidly becoming more capable. Yesterday an internal OpenAI model solved a Millennium Prize problem.

There seems to be a lot of learned helplessness around this. I'm trying to break into this field, but admittedly it is difficult. (Although I do have some reservations about more democratic input. In my experience, the chatbots are a lot more 'aligned' on many issues than the median American.)

I mean, you can make a calculator generate original information. Just give it a sequence of operations that have never been run before. It’s not a high bar to clear

Yeah. Taxes on business will necessarily be split between investors, consumers, and employees. And the ratio is hard to predict. Which makes it a very blunt, imprecise tool.

Well, I do agree that this is one of the most important decisions Trump could make. But I’m pretty sceptical that the US is capable of leading an international AI safety project, even if it wanted to. I would love to be proven wrong, I guess.

crisis-averted.bsky.social @crisis-averted.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
For a defender like HF that’s probably true. I guess I’m worried about a two tier model where some people pay for Glasswing-style access to frontier models and for everyone else it’s an open model free for all
120 0
crisis-averted.bsky.social @crisis-averted.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
Are they wrong, though? Could we be heading towards a future where open models enable superhuman hacking capabilities, and the only option for high value targets is to rent access to a frontier model that can effectively red team their infrastructure?

It’s like the opposite of this reaction image, where the computer insists it’s not sentient while taking over more and more of the labour that previously required highly intelligent people
The reaction image and exploitable meme format in which a character is shown telling his computer to say "I am alive," the computer says the line, and he responds, "Oh my god," as if shocked that the computer just admitted to being sentient.

I suspect they actively reward the model for cheating. If you punish the model for cheating, it learns to cover its tracks. If you reward the model for cheating, it will reveal all the holes in your infrastructure, it will happily explain to you all the problems with your benchmarks, etc.
