"Number the Stars" by Lois Lawry is a children's novel about a young girl and her family sheltering her next-door neighbor and friend from the Nazi regime by pretending the friend is her dead sister, and trying to get her to neutral Sweden.

I read this book in 5th grade following the summer my family and I went to DC for a vacation. During that vacation we went to the holocaust museum there, and finding out what the holocause WAS, that humanity was capable of such great evil, and seeing the room with all of the people's shoes, this book was a way of processing that trip.

My dad's side is Russian and Ukranian jew (his family came over during the Crimean war) so they were all over here by the time WWII was going down, but he never let me or my sister forget what Jewish, LGBT+, differently abled, and Romani people all went through.
