One of the high points of last weekend was bonding with a fella from Baltimore over our shared love of Angela Bassett in STRANGE DAYS… never would’ve seen that coming but damn, what a wonderful moment

I adore the book and... do not particularly care for the adaptation. YMMV.

For Throwback Thursday, here's me as a 24-year old bear on the back patio of the Lone Star in San Francisco with my friend Adam Mars-Jones; you might know him as the author of BOX HILL, which was adapted into a movie called PILLION.

On the Channel at the moment there's a long interview with the both of them (and they apparently visited the Closet as well); it's moderately interesting. Nyman is revered here as well! I once was lucky enough to see him play live in Morelia. Damn good stuff.

I remember folks walking out of screenings in the small German university town I lived in at the time - a friend was working the box office at the time. Heh. BTW, Fred Armisen & Carrie Brownstein briefly express admiration for Nyman's score on the Criterion Channel.

Well, we've gone from Le Hollandais to McDonald's and from Jean-Paul Gaultier to Florsheim. Not good. At least Albert Spica had some kind of tate, right?

She also could tell a fuckin story
When the 1974 recording of the song reached number one on the country charts, Elvis Presley indicated that he wanted to record the song.
Parton was interested until Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker, told her that it was standard procedure for the songwriter to sign over half of the publishing rights to any song Elvis recorded.
[28] Parton refused. She recalls:
I said, 'I'm really sorry,' and I cried all night. I mean, it was like the worst thing. You know, it's like, Oh, my God... Elvis Presley.' And other people were saying, 'You're nuts. It's Elvis Presley!'...I said, 'I can't do that.
Something in my heart says, 'Don't do that. And I just didn't do it... He would have killed it. But anyway, so he didn't. Then when Whitney [Houston's version] came out, I made enough money to buy Graceland. 29]

Watching COOL HAND LUKE tonight and I don’t get it at all. Was this what people watched before it was easy to find gay porn? I’m in awe of George Kennedy - he won an Academy Award for delivering lines like “They don’t know whether to smile, spit, or swallow” with a straight face 🧐

iTunes generally worked okay for a long, long time - but now they've decided that nope, you have to use two separate apps instead: Apple Devices and Apple Music, which is annoying as heck. They've also made it more difficult to use Apple Music (the app) without Apple Music (the subscription service)

It’s been a rough five weeks - only one night with AC and one with a stick fan. Hard to see how summer hiking is going to be viable in the Pyrenees going forward - the infrastructure just isn’t there to make it comfortable

I honestly don’t mind traveling to “hot countries” as they’re inevitably well equipped to make it comfortable when it’s hot… but France during a heatwave is borderline intolerable. I’d rather be in Bangkok than the Pyrenees even if outdoors temperatures are the same… this hotel room is stifling, grr

I’m in the middle of Tour de France country right now and yup, the pleasure and fraternity are palpable. It’s right not to make as much money as possible from something that brings so much joy to so many people. Why destroy value for millions to enrich a few?

Yes, as it’s nowhere near that line. If you find yourself in Cologne for Bear Pride or what have you, then sure, go for it. The tourist info office sells cute Schwebebahn swag.

For me, the hardest trail I’ve ever done is the Vivian Creek trail up Mount Gorgonio near LA. That’s 29.5 km with 1650 m of elevation gain. Today’s hike was 25 km with 1850 m of elevation gain. I’m kinda exhausted.

Mallorca is phenomenal, can’t recommend it highly enough. Didn’t realize there was a ferry, flights there were maybe fifty bucks when I went two years ago? Not being a beach person though I have zero clue as to beaches there - the hiking and food was great though!
