For Throwback Thursday, here's me as a 24-year old bear on the back patio of the Lone Star in San Francisco with my friend Adam Mars-Jones; you might know him as the author of BOX HILL, which was adapted into a movie called PILLION.

Watching COOL HAND LUKE tonight and I don’t get it at all. Was this what people watched before it was easy to find gay porn? I’m in awe of George Kennedy - he won an Academy Award for delivering lines like “They don’t know whether to smile, spit, or swallow” with a straight face 🧐

just spent nearly an hour on chat and then phone support to get their Apple Music app working on Windows 11 and was amused to see that this POS is still lying around in my library like a dead fly on a discarded uncrustable

For me, the hardest trail I’ve ever done is the Vivian Creek trail up Mount Gorgonio near LA. That’s 29.5 km with 1650 m of elevation gain. Today’s hike was 25 km with 1850 m of elevation gain. I’m kinda exhausted.

sure, British Airways, I'm definitely interested in paying $132 for 30" seat pitch (less than Southwest!), no lounge access, and no fast-track security (I'm flying out of London City Airport where those things don't exist)
A screen capture from ba.com - British Airways is offering me a business class upgrade for £98.40, promising fast-track through security and access to an airport lounge at an airport where those things don't exist as well as a generous 30 inch seat pitch (less then Southwest here in the USA)

On the morning of Tuesday, June, 2026, I asked Google if today was Patch Tuesday. According to their AI Overview, today is not Patch Tuesday. Patch Tuesday is tomorrow, Tuesday, June 9.

Confidential to Dr. Oz, Turkish-American dual citizen: no, that's not Cyrillic. That's Armenian. Why the hell are you here in Los Angeles targeting Armenian neighborhoods and alleging widespread fraud? Denying the Armenian genocide was bad enough already; this is reprehensible.

Christian Gangsta Rap, indeed. Op 1.9, 2003 or was it 2004? And as per usual, AI doesn't know WTF it's talking about:

My first CD: CD1 by Throbbing Gristle. Just like Bruce, I got a copy of this before actually getting a CD player; in 1986, they were exotic, but it was easy enough to borrow one from a high school classmate to listen to it.

Ironically, the first thing that comes to mind when I think about "coming out" is rejection - at 17, I joined the undergraduate gay men's support group at Cal, which was frustrating because none of the other men in that group were comfortable with my physical appearance and were kinda vocal about it

I’ve just arrived at Rocamadour. That’s 30 days hiking and 680 km from Cluny. Given the weather - just over 100 degrees - this is where my Camino ends. I’ve seen enough, as they say - time to take some time off, especially if there’s air conditioning!

It’s Sunday morning. I woke up in a convent. I hit the 500 km walked mark on the Camino yesterday; I don’t have the (visa) time (or frankly the inclination!) to walk all the way to Santiago de Compostela, but I feel like I’ve proved the point already, as it were.

I completed the GR765 yesterday - 340 km from Cluny to Le Puy-en-Velay. A moderately challenging walk, almost completely deserted (no other walkers most days, just 2 sisters who were walking 5 days of it), with some wonderful things to see.

Dear France: I love you, but this is hardly an appropriate number of calories for a “hiker’s dinner” after walking 20 km in the heat. Cute, but c’mon! Two bites of a Blooming Onion probably has more calories than this “inverted Parmesan tarte”.

Is the French post office always this bad? Ordered an umbrella a week ago with 2-day delivery and all that’s happened is daily updates from La Poste that it’s delayed, that it couldn’t be delivered, and that maybe they’ll try again soon :/

Just checked in for my flight to Lyon and oh man, not happy about the weather - I start walking Friday and it's warmer there than here in the Colorado Desert. Climate change? Not a fan!

I grew up in Stockton, California; I went to the same elementary school as Spiral Stairs. Our Moms knew each other from the P.T.A. board, but I don't recall ever meeting Scott - he's a few years older. I watched PAVEMENTS on the flight home from PDX last night & cannot recommend it highly enough.

10 years ago today, I hiked from E. C. Manning Park to the USA-Canada border, which is sadly closed in both directions these days :/ www.pcta.org/2025/travel-... Also sad: not only did that Tilley hat fall apart in Japan last April, they no longer sew them in Canada. That'll be my last one, sniff.

Merci ! Had to take the longer/easier trail as the shorter/steeper one was ‘dangerous’ according to the Henro museum staff after that rain, but oh man : perfect weather today. Butterflies everywhere. Amazing.

Here's why I don't eat sushi much back home in Palm Springs: a single order of edamame at Sandfish (for example) costs $11 + $1 tax + $2 tip, or $14. My lunch today at Sushiro was $16 for an enormous amount of sushi, pumpkin tempura, French fries, ketchup, a whisky highball, tea, tax, and service.
