Turning a fun but rather barebones series of gags like Nakamura-kun into a full-length TV series kinda demanded more pathos to work, and few people better than Haruka Fujita to make the yearning and everyone's angst hit stronger than ever

The defining trait of Jaadugar is its patterning: it's the most visually arresting aspect, a useful tool to get across the texture of each culture, and time and time again it holds thematic significance as well. The anime uses them to immediately establish a thriving, rich civilization

But making the setting 3D and real wasn't the answer they wanted. Yamada talked about valuing the original's simple 2D appeal, akin to Islamic miniatures. This causes the anime to go back and forth between very literal, spacious locations and deliberate, flat irreality. There's charm to the duality

Stunning premiere for Jaadugar. The level of cultural research and respect is on display, but Tomato Soup & the team led by Abel Gongora and Naoko Yamada make it clear they don't want a detached historical retelling with affecting, highly subjective storytelling. As unique as it is high quality

Witch Hat Atelier being good as an anime was no surprise, but this felt like the first episode where it surpassed the idea of being a replica & became a meaningfully different experience that stands the comparisons to the original. Not sure how often they'll be able to pull this off, but damn great

Official statements noted that the Witch Hat Atelier anime was, under Shirahama's supervision, expanding on the original work. And it hasn't been until the incredible third episode that we've really seen what they meant, with Coco's test being fleshed out & connected more firmly to her character arc

A new report from the University of California shows that the state's decision to raise the minimum wage for fast food workers to $20/hr didn’t hurt jobs, or raise prices much. Data from over 2,000 restaurants shows that the $20/hr minimum wage didn’t reduce employment. /1

The OP derives a pop art visual language out of aspects like the series' old-school logo, whereas the ending outright goes for 80s & technically early 90s songs. Been clear since the announcement but the anime really gets the Rumiko Takahashi-ish vibes it evokes

Ganbare Nakamura-kun is a sweet adaptation so far. Feels reminiscent of Seihantai's in that much of the appeal is the way that familiar material is processed, but unlike that one (and partly by necessity of such concise short material), it has a lot of original material to flesh out a cute romcom

Funny that Saito stepped aside as Frieren's series director, yet was fully in charge of an original puppet show. Self-indulgent in that he's such a big doll guy he has dedicated accounts, yet representative of the anime's thoughtful expansion of its world's culture. That's how legends would spread!

You and your wife drop your 6-year-old off at school. You just moved here. You see ICE terrorizing your new neighbors. You film them, as is your legal right. Your wife complies with orders. She is then shot in the head. You still have to pick up your child later today. This could be you.

Distraught woman says ICE killed her wife in video after deadly Minneapolis shooting
"They killed my wife," the distraught woman says, adding, "They shot her in the head."

"They killed my wife. I don't know what to do," the woman says through sobs in the footage, with a damaged SUV visible in the distance behind her. "We stopped to videotape, and they shot her in the head," the woman cries.
"We have a six-year-old at school," she says, almost unable to breathe, as a chaotic scene in which federal officers prevented at least one doctor who was on the scene from assisting the shot victim unfolds. "We're new here," the distraught woman says in despair.
