actually Todd was the name of the doctor
Back in the 1990s, a great decade for music, some folks formed a band. What should the call it? I know, one of them said, Big Head Todd and the Monsters. Then they released some albums, this one is three dudes standing in front of an old building and it’s called sister sweetly. Not sure which one is Todd.

It was the first question I had, and I was told yes. And people who live in coastal communities are and will be navigating climate impacts while cutting GHGs, and there’s a lot of work ahead on paths forward to address these.

Agreed. As someone who has spent the last 6 years building decarb infrastructure, this isn’t perfect, but it is incredibly helpful. Compromise is difficult, but having Lee and Whitehouse in agreement is a miracle. This is thoughtful, this effective.

Bill’s piece outlines some of the risks & challenges of climate policymaking in this moment, including a sharp insight from @lissaharris.bsky.social. Solving climate has a running clock, GHGs we emit stick around for 100s or 1000s of years. Every ton and every year matters. I think the deal is good.

Marginalized communities disproportionately bear the cumulative burden of air pollution right now, which causes lasting health impacts to lots of folks every year under the status quo. Let’s get air and climate pollution to zero.

do you think they will have more power to get a bill passed and enacted in Q1?
240
Costa Samaras @costasamaras.com · 01/10/2026
not sure if the likelihood of getting future 60 in Sen plus majority in house plus veto proof in both if needed for something good is higher than Sen pass now.
190
Costa Samaras @costasamaras.com · 01/10/2026
I think the likelihood of getting a bill passed and enacted that is “good” is highest now, less in the lame duck, even less in Q1. A lot of future avoided emissions depend on something good.

The Senate’s Big Bipartisan Permitting Deal, Explained
The Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act would remove longstanding roadblocks to expanding the power grid and developing new energy infrastructure. Here’s our guide to what’s in it.

Here's the topline for me on the permitting bill: we need to double or triple the grid with clean electricity if we are going to solve climate change. We need to do this in concert with communities & the environment, and do this quickly on a climate-relevant timeline. The contours of this look good.

The Senate's permitting bill text is up. It's way too big/complex for anyone who didn't have early access to digest today, so beware hot takes, but this bit (p. 54 line 9) is funny: If an agency misses a deadline, the agency head can't travel >25 miles from their desk til the agency submits the doc.

the horrific cornell gang rape case has me thinking about emma sulkowicz who alleged she was raped as a student at columbia in 2014 and never got any justice. it has me thinking about the physical and mental weight young women are forced to carry while their safety is subsumed by male potential.
