There’s a difference between calls for remembrance, and calls to “never forget”. One of them allows us to heal and honor those we’ve lost. The other asks us to renew our vow to hate something we refuse to reckon with. For fuck’s sake, 9/11 is a time of remembrance. It’s not a rallying cry.

To the First Responders who ran in when others were trying to get out, who lost their lives that day, or later because the trauma was too much to live with - you are the embodiment of the word “hero”. You were a source of strength when we had to “look for the helpers” to make any sense of it.

In the years immediately after 9/11 I was all-in on vigilance and suspicion. But after visiting Ground Zero in later years and seeing it now prominently features a fucking gift shop, I realize I have done enough to contribute to the surreal world we created in the wake of that day.

For my part I’m declaring myself a non-combatant in the zero-sum game of demagoguery. I don’t have anything left to give to this yearly exercise of stoking mistrust and demonizing the “other”. The annual re-upping of negativity has taken its last ounce of energy from me.

If you are a member of the post 9/11 generation, I’m going to make an unusual request: forget. Let that day, the heinous acts of terrorism, and the decades of war and hate in retaliation go quietly into the dustbin of history. “Never forget” is nothing but a plea to justify hate indefinitely.
