I grew up in the shadow of 2 power plants. In the 80s when it snowed you’d find chunks of black rocks that smelled like soot in the snow. Holding a lighter to them, they’d burn and smell like sulfur. By the mid 90s, after the CAA made them add scrubbers to those plants, the black rocks went away.

Had a poli sci class with a prof that was a politician for 50 years. He told us in the 50s men would come up to them on the playground, would pay kids $1 each to pass out whiskey outside the polls with a candidate’s name on it. It was such a problem they banned alcohol sales on election day in WV.
