I saw like 5 anti-Jackson ads last night in PDX and assumed they got the wrong Portland.

Yep! Seems like a good way to negotiate, but you still have to go through the dealers ultimately.

Abolish the dealership model, or at least let Costco sell Subarus.

I would make a case for the Blind Willie McTell version of “Dying Crapshooter’s Blues” from the sessions he did with Alan Lomax. A southern gothic mythological drama and an incredible, propulsive performance.

Me and my wife both liked Digger. It captures how our age is both grotesquely and subtly demoralizing at the same time. Maybe not a recipe for box office success, but I have a soft spot for movies that are commercial train wrecks. Give me Digger over another tired remake or sequel.

Probably the concentration of the entertainment industry and the high concentration of Hawaiian and Hillbilly/Western artists who came to try their luck in films. “Singing In the Saddle” is a book that has a bunch of great background info about the era. Also “Kika Kila” by John Troutman.

George Beauchamp at Rickenbacker had the first patent, but the Hawaiian music craze was driving the industry. Freddy Tavares did design the Stratocaster for Fender. Dobro, National, Rickenbacker, Fender, Bigsby, Weissenborn, and others around LA were all interacting and competing in the 30’s.

The Rickenbacker frypan in my profile pic is pushing 90 years old. Still sounds great! There was a generation of Hawaiian musicians that straddled the acoustic and electric ages. Sol Hoopii, Eddie Bush, Sol K Bright, etc. It’s fascinating to hear how they adapted their style to the new technology.

When I was young I didn’t know “Maneater” by Hall and Oats was a metaphor or whatever. I imagined a Lovecraftian horror waiting around on the streets at night literally eating men. It was the time of Thriller and Ghostbusters, and the top 40 was spooky.

Disintegration loops. We have a post-apocalyptic Fred Meyer where it would really nail the vibe.

Proud Mary is great for brunch. Unusual and Australian. Flying Fish Company is great. Por Qué No is a crowd pleaser. Broder for Scandinavian brunch. Pizza Otto is great. New Cascadia for gluten free treats. There’s really so much good stuff. Eem/Hat Yai are good.

Generally agree, but I was playing through the headphone out of my buddy’s Milkman class D Pedalboard amp, and with the speaker sim activated it was pretty good for clean steel guitar. I usually use a 60’s Princeton. If I was usimg it for overdrive it would probably be different.

There are all kinds of little powered mixer-with-speakers combos that would work. I’d look for something all-in-one and not a big system with a separate board, amp, and speakers. Roland, Fishman, and Peavey make little acoustic guitar amps with microphone inputs. That could work.

This is a very Portland-y post. There are probably actually a bunch of people in town who are like “oh yeah, what did we do with that child-sized sea-shanty melodion?” Like asking around for a banjo in West Virginia.

This is true. When they say “You pick the place for dinner,” they mean “You need to guess the place I’ve selected for dinner.” This applies to GenX too.

Also, you could smoke in the grocery store. Even the employees. They had ashtrays at the end of each isle at the Ogletree’s in GA. Everyone smoked. The cashiers smoked, the produce guy smoked at a little stand in the produce department where they weighed and priced your produce.

They used the yeast that was all over Otzi the Ice Man to make bread. I think we might be seeing the birth of archaeo-forensic cuisine.

I play Hawaiian steel guitar AND press the sampler button. Sometimes the wrong sound comes out and it’s awesome. I’m shooting for “performative relaxation”. Maybe I play a really difficult arrangement of Lehuanani in th B11 tuning, maybe I press the sampler button and the wave noise happens.

What’s crazy to me is that the Eastern OR and WA are pretty solid for Trump. They want to defect to Idaho. State officials can now turn around and say “sorry, Trump hung you out to dry. We’re doing everything we can though.” Those are “his people”. Seems short-sighted.

I’m finding a lot of things too loud lately. I’ve worn earplugs in movies. Live concerts in small venues are mixed way too loud for the room. Lately the best shows I’ve been to are house shows with the volume at a “reasonable” level. I’m probably just getting old.

This is my teacher! Alan is the best and I’ve learned so much from him. He’s an incredible player, a living link to tradition, and a skilled and generous instructor. He’s bringing up a whole generation of new talent and getting all of these kids in front of audiences.

Hot tip: go to stamp collector meetups and buy the ones that aren’t collectible. Going rate is about 50 cents on the dollar. Like most with collectible stuff, there are a lot of common stamps that people end up buying in lots to get the few they want. Everyone wants to get rid of the non-rare ones.

Watching them work, here's what they did: spray a section, let it sit for hours to days, then spray the next one feathering over the cured edge. This lands FAR outside the 4-hour application overlap window (worse in hot humid weather). The seams never got a chemical weld in the first place. 4/

I’ve thought of opening up a dad-centric venue in PDX: Shows would run from 6:30-9:00 PM, starting with a detailed rig-rundown and ending with a Q&A by the performers. Adjoining arcade in case the kids get bored. Gluten-free food and drink options and plenty of seating for those with bad knees.

historians are divided on whether trump was actually a real person, or the stories of a large series of petty tyrants over a period of perhaps 100 years whose stories got merged and blended together back when AI was unsophisticated and new

Yes! This would be popular. Direct sales from the manufacturer, transparent pricing. No one but the dealers and GOP insiders likes the dealership model.
