At last Monday’s meeting, I made it clear that increasing Local Property Tax from 12% to 20% was too much, particularly when families are already facing a high cost of living. I could support a 15% increase as a compromise but not above that. People are feeling the pressure, and we have to listen.

Budget 2027 is upon us. We've been pushing our pre-budget ideas from a better savings model to taxing data centres to reversing transport fares to €2.5 billion inflation fuel fund. Seven ideas. All practical. All doable. All to protect our futures in a climate & cost of living crisis. #budget27

We've just launched our pre-budget ideas. The basic idea that Ireland's high costs need investment to deal with - not just money to cope. Our core proposal is a big once-off package to support households financially and to move faster off expensive fossil fuels.

STATEMENT ON IRELAND/ISRAEL
FIXTURE
The entire FAI senior management and board need to consider their position. They have catastrophically mismanaged this situation from the outset. Rather than listen to and understand the mood of football fans, they have outsourced the decision to play onto the individual conscience's of the players. It is massively unfair to put this call on the shoulders of young players at the beginning of their careers. Making players vote the day before a match only divides the team.

Thanks @irishtimes.com for publishing my letter in today’s weekend edition. Government parties should fund the public transport network properly and run the timetable already published: www.irishtimes.com/opinion/lett...
Sir,

Cllr John Kennedy, (Letters, September 24th) asks passengers to see an extra 60c a day as the cost of a better public transport service. Many of us would settle for the service we are already paying for.

Ghost buses remain a persistent feature of Dublin’s public transport network: services that appear on Real-Time Passenger Information displays and apps, but never arrive. The Minister for Transport has called cancellation rates on some routes unacceptable, and the National Transport Authority (NTA) has been penalising operators over reliability. None of that is a revenue problem. Those journeys are already funded. Fixing them costs the passenger nothing.

Neither will fare increases deliver the 140 new services promised for 2027. New services need buses, depots and road space - and those are financed through capital expenditure, not from fares. Government's planned fare increases will cut passenger numbers according to NTA data. Some people will cancel their journeys while others will be back in cars.

On the NTA's own figures, a 15 per cent increase on fares raises about €80 million. It costs the commuter roughly €140 a year and it buys no improvement in what actually turns up. Shoppers learned to call this kind of deal shrinkflation: the same price, a smaller product. Here passengers are asked to pay more for a service that is already falling short.

Government parties should fund the network properly, and run the timetable already published.

Yours,

Eva Dowling
