Nightfall arrives earlier with each passing evening. The breeze carries the fragrance of crisp leaves. Shadows grow deeper. Autumn has arrived. During this season, many readers gravitate toward stories featuring ghosts, monsters, and murderers. The Butcher’s Daughter by David Demchuk and Corinne Leigh Clark deserves a spot on one’s Halloween booklist.

An epistolary novel–a collection of letters, newspaper articles, and other printed matter, The Butcher’s Daughter tells the origin story of Mrs. Lovett, the London piemaker infamous for her secret ingredient of human flesh. After the death of her father, a butcher, of course, a young woman named Margaret Evans is sent into service in the household of a secretive physician. Thus begins a series of scandalous and ghastly events involving an ancient society, a drugged woman, illegal medical procedures, a high-class brothel, and several murders that collectively lead to the future Mrs. Lovett meeting Sweeney Todd.

Demchuk and Clark mine the original source material, the penny dreadful The String of Pearls serialized between 1846 and 1847, to construct their own unique portrayal of a grimy and dangerous Victorian London. Poverty, violence, and death always loom large. While presenting a fresh exploration of a character embedded in popular culture through musicals and films, the authors tease at questions of gender, sexuality, and class. Meanwhile, the novel’s framework hints that some of Mrs. Lovett’s recollections merit skepticism. Her chronicled life might exist as another piece of fiction.

Victorian obsessives, horror aficionados, and maybe even Broadway devotees will find The Butcher’s Daughter to be a satisfying and compelling book. After finishing it, one might hear something new in the lyrics of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd.
