Somewhere in the depths of Cardiff Central station hides a message only Gen Z can understand…

This animated map shows a day of actual UK train movements, delays and all! On 19 August 2026 the network peaked at 1,794 trains moving at once. Even around 3am, at least 141 were running. Passenger services wind down, but freight and maintenance keep rolling. Source: buff.ly/0zrhl41

Took a trip back to the ancestral homelands of South Yorkshire last week. A chance to take a tram, see the sights and catch up with family, as well as cart around a model of a Woodhead Electric loco which I later gave to my dad on Father’s Day!

Must be 30 years since trains regularly called at this platform. Today I very conveniently stepped off a train at the former Filton [Junction] station for a crew swap in the pouring rain!

This is sad news indeed, but not entirely unexpected. STV's former Grampian region will now become an "opt-out" segment of the national 18:00 programme, echoing what happened to many of ITV's English regions in 2008.

@showmeasign.online Saw this little sign in Stratford-upon-Avon at the weekend, and wondered how many similar signs still exist…
A small circular sign, about 3 inches in diameter, affixed to the side of a stone building. The sign looks worn but has a light blue background and white text reading “Waiting Prohibited on Even Dates”A wider view of the location of the small sign in the previous picture. A stone building wall protrudes into the road, with a drainpipe and another large plaque mounted on it. Across the road the corner of an almost gothic-style bright red brick building is visible, and between the two buildings in the background is a white and black timber-framed building

It’s the little things that make my day. Waiting for booked time at Yate Middle earlier I tried to find the Zero Milepost for the Thornbury branch. Found it hidden under a ton of ivy. One side left uncovered - for now! Should be visible from Yate Platform 2. (All done from position of safety etc.)
A mass of ivy growth surrounds a partially uncovered square yellow sign with a black number ‘0’.The partially uncovered yellow sign with a black number ‘0’ surrounded by ivy is shown on the left in the foreground. Behind and to the right Freightliner-liveried Class 66 locomotive 66617’s yellow front sits at the head of a train of blue JNA-G stone wagons at the start of the former Thornbury Branch Line which curves to the left and out of view. There is a stop board visible in the mid-ground and the back of a signal-post housing BL6565 Ground Position Light signal. On the right of frame are the two tracks of the Bristol to Gloucester line.

A very happy 100th birthday to the Double Yellow signal aspect! Apparently on 21 March 1926 the Southern Railway first introduced 4-aspect colour light signalling between Holborn and Elephant & Castle. (Apologies for the crap picture, it's the only [recent] image of a double-yellow signal I have!)

This morning’s theme was orange and red. There’s definitely something special about being out on the rails watching the sun rise ahead. Makes the 01:30 alarm worth it! (Picture taken from outside cab, while train secured, etc. etc.)
Railway tracks, paintwork and overhead line equipment stretch into the distance, the metals picked out by the giant nuclear reactor in the sky. The sky and light haze is tinted a deep shade of orange as the signal ahead remains resolutely at red and a GWR IET (802016, operating 1D05 06:00 Oxford to Paddington) breezes past up the Reading flyover to the right of frame, its tiny red tail lights shining dimly away

For the first time in decades, Cirencester Town station building was open for the public to visit this weekend. Spotted “in the wild” at Reading yesterday: train punctuality and cancellation statistics! I remember these shown on posters at stations in the 1990s, but I feel sure the figures then were better than these… A 7.9% cancellation rate (Lizzy Line) and 70.2% punctuality (CrossCountry) is not too great!
A digital display on the wall showing punctuality and cancellation figures for trains at Reading station in the four weeks from 5th January to 1st February 2025, broken down by operator. CrossCountry has a punctuality of 70.2% and 1.7% cancellation rate. Elizabeth Line has a punctuality of 81.1% and a 7.9% cancellation rate. GWR has a punctuality of 76.1% and a 2.9% cancellation rate. South Western Railway has a punctuality of 78.1% and a 2.4% cancellation rate. The Western Route overall has a punctuality of 81.4% and a 3.8% cancellation rate. The notes explain that punctuality is a measure of what proportion of trains arrive within 3 minutes of their scheduled time, and that the cancellation rate counts only trains cancelled after 22:00 the previous evening of the day they were due to run.
