It's rather unlike Mr "Nudge nudge, wink wink" to miss the word "next" out of that particular phrase 😁 Missed opportunity aside, wishing you every success with your travels and book! 👍

Most unfortunate indeed! However Poole, Caldercruix, Burton-on-Trent, Alness, Manchester United FC Halt, and Weeley would like a word... [POO, CAC, BUT, ASS, MUF and WEE] I think I'm still 12 at heart really 😂

Somewhere in the depths of Cardiff Central station hides a message only Gen Z can understand…
A sign on a wall with two large numbers encased in separate circles. The numbers are “6” and “7”. A set of stairs lead upwards at the end of the dimly-lit corridor

This animated map shows a day of actual UK train movements, delays and all! On 19 August 2026 the network peaked at 1,794 trains moving at once. Even around 3am, at least 141 were running. Passenger services wind down, but freight and maintenance keep rolling. Source: buff.ly/0zrhl41

After taking an unreasonably long time poring over this, I think I have a solution! 75 x 10 = 750 750 + 4 = 754 754 x 6 = 4524 4524 - 9 = 4515 4515 / 5 = 903

3! = 6 different ways. Looks stunning btw, very jealous! The highest above sea level I've ever been is about 2760m in the Alps so here's a question for you - is there a nice equation for air density vs elevation above sea level? :)

My paternal grandfather worked at Metro-Vick on the traction motors for the Woodhead locos so it was nice to take the model to places of significance to the story of the line and to my grandfather’s life in Sheffield.

Took a trip back to the ancestral homelands of South Yorkshire last week. A chance to take a tram, see the sights and catch up with family, as well as cart around a model of a Woodhead Electric loco which I later gave to my dad on Father’s Day!

This is sad news indeed, but not entirely unexpected. STV's former Grampian region will now become an "opt-out" segment of the national 18:00 programme, echoing what happened to many of ITV's English regions in 2008.

I didn't know NRM had a Class 76! I have a family connection (grandad was electrical draughtsman at Metro-Vick & worked on traction motors) so they're dear to me too. Am I right in saying the 76s spent time test running on the 1500V DC Great Eastern lines before they entered service on Woodhead?

And in 1985-ish where it stood in for a fictional ?Gloucester station sparking the chain of events in the film Clockwise that causes John Cleese's character to slowly lose his mind...! (Yes I may have watched the film more than a few times, but have never visited Hull!)
A still frame from the film Clockwise (1986): John Cleese stands with a pained expression under the arched overall roof of Hull Paragon station as a train departs without him. The rear of a Mk1 Brake coach in BR Blue and Grey is the culprit. The side of the very front of a first-gen DMU is visible to the right of frame, and the side of what looks like another DMU is visible on a far platform to the left.At the platform barrier gate, John Cleese's character remonstrates with John Bardon playing the ticket inspector after a mix-up with the train he was supposed to travel on. The overall roof of Hull Paragon station is the backdrop

@showmeasign.online Saw this little sign in Stratford-upon-Avon at the weekend, and wondered how many similar signs still exist…
A small circular sign, about 3 inches in diameter, affixed to the side of a stone building. The sign looks worn but has a light blue background and white text reading “Waiting Prohibited on Even Dates”A wider view of the location of the small sign in the previous picture. A stone building wall protrudes into the road, with a drainpipe and another large plaque mounted on it. Across the road the corner of an almost gothic-style bright red brick building is visible, and between the two buildings in the background is a white and black timber-framed building

It’s the little things that make my day. Waiting for booked time at Yate Middle earlier I tried to find the Zero Milepost for the Thornbury branch. Found it hidden under a ton of ivy. One side left uncovered - for now! Should be visible from Yate Platform 2. (All done from position of safety etc.)
A mass of ivy growth surrounds a partially uncovered square yellow sign with a black number ‘0’.The partially uncovered yellow sign with a black number ‘0’ surrounded by ivy is shown on the left in the foreground. Behind and to the right Freightliner-liveried Class 66 locomotive 66617’s yellow front sits at the head of a train of blue JNA-G stone wagons at the start of the former Thornbury Branch Line which curves to the left and out of view. There is a stop board visible in the mid-ground and the back of a signal-post housing BL6565 Ground Position Light signal. On the right of frame are the two tracks of the Bristol to Gloucester line.

Not a problem, appreciated. It’s rather sad isn’t it that the internet has taught us to be so suspicious and cynical that even when someone goes out of their way not to infringe someone else’s copyright - by using an inferior photo of their own - it can still be thought of as not genuine! Ah well…

Not sure what makes you assume that! If it looks odd it’s because it’s a highly cropped version of a photo I took myself on 28 September 2024 at Ashley Down station which opened to the public that day. Here’s the original uncropped version along with a couple of others showing the shiny new station!

A very happy 100th birthday to the Double Yellow signal aspect! Apparently on 21 March 1926 the Southern Railway first introduced 4-aspect colour light signalling between Holborn and Elephant & Castle. (Apologies for the crap picture, it's the only [recent] image of a double-yellow signal I have!)

This morning’s theme was orange and red. There’s definitely something special about being out on the rails watching the sun rise ahead. Makes the 01:30 alarm worth it! (Picture taken from outside cab, while train secured, etc. etc.)
Railway tracks, paintwork and overhead line equipment stretch into the distance, the metals picked out by the giant nuclear reactor in the sky. The sky and light haze is tinted a deep shade of orange as the signal ahead remains resolutely at red and a GWR IET (802016, operating 1D05 06:00 Oxford to Paddington) breezes past up the Reading flyover to the right of frame, its tiny red tail lights shining dimly away
