Unidos/Monarca have some good stuff going for people who need help getting the lay of the land. And while its not everyone's cup of tea, especially long-term, ISAIAH/Faith In Minnesota is -great- at helping people figure basics out, and pointing in useful directions.

And no shade to others - there's a lot of reasons why people do use Amazon, and many of them have to do with other options not really existing in many places!

"Drivers wearing cameras" is the push I needed to get back to seriously avoiding Amazon, so after work I rode my bike to a local hardware store to get an oven thermometer. By doing so I got to see a gorgeous sunset, pet the neighbor's foster puppy, and give another neighbor dog a belly rub. 🚴🏻

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

Tom Lehrer's "We Will All Go Together When We Go" upset me so much as a little kid that I would leave the room, plug my ears, and make noise so I didn't have to hear it. (My mom did anti-nuke activism, so I had a pretty clear idea what it was about.)

Higher ed leaders are doing "decline of public trust" discourse in order to avoid talking about all the things they've done to undermine their institutions, including exploiting contingent faculty labor, attacking student protest, and underfunding the humanities

Will is 100% right. Has happened to multiple clients of mine. One judge (not my case) has said that this isn't really release and ordered the person *actually* released. But it's forcing us habeas attorneys to win our cases twice (or more)
On September 9, 2026, Respondents permitted Pablo F. to exit the building where
he was detained, but he was immediately swarmed by four ICE officers and handcuffed as
soon as he stepped outside. (Doc. No. 25-3 at 4:48:45–4:49:26.)3
 The officers drove him
to the back of the Whipple building and returned him to a holding cell. (Doc. No. 21 ¶¶ 8–
9; Doc. No. 25 ¶ 5.) During this encounter, officers dislocated Pablo F.’s shoulder. (Doc.
No. 21 ¶ 7.)4
Pablo F. now bringsthis Motion seeking to enforce the Court’s Order granting
the Petition.Again, Respondents make no attempt whatsoever to support their assertion that
Pablo F. was released. Absent any such argument, the Court cannot agree that a reasonable
person would have felt free to leave when exiting the detention facility and immediately
being stopped by ICE officers. Likewise, absent some argument, the Court necessarily
concludes that Pablo F. was subject to restraints not shared by the public generally when
he took one step outside of the detention facility and was immediately stopped by ICE
officers who forcibly returned him to a detention cell. Because Respondents do not make
any legal argument that Pablo F. was ever meaningfully released from custody, the Court
grants the motion and orders Pablo F.’s release.6
6 To be clear, Pablo F. is not arguing, and the Court is not concluding, that an order of
release in a habeas matter renders unlawful any future arrests. Rather, the Court reaches
the narrow conclusion that because Respondents advance no legal argument in this case to
support their assertion that Pablo F. was released from custody, and because the
uncontested facts show that ICE officers immediately swarmed Pablo F. as soon as he
stepped out of the building, Pablo F. was not released from custody.

My cat from the city shelter was picked up as a yearish-old unneutered stray, but he was verrrry well-socialized at some point, and has a deep affinity for pizza. I hypothesize he lived in a multi-roomates in their early 20s situation of some sort.

My actual take on the wellness program feedback was that there are skilled professionals one can pay to give pats on the head and say "you are very good", but that it's a lot healthier if that -isn't- attached to ones employer.

Also more broadly the "let me pay someone to keep (and further monetize) deep stats about my decidedly amateur athletic pursuits" culture, and other self-metricization. First, accept that it's good to track your sleep habits via a third party; then, tech that makes it simpler sounds useful.

This reminds me of the time when I got to read a ton of employee feedback on our employer's "wellness" program, and was really surprised how many people seemed to value "someone outside of me tracks (useless data!) and tells me I'm doing good" almost independently of any insurance fee reductions.

Your 3rd dose today of Anthropic settlement madness (at least from me). Authors, CHECK YOUR CLAIMS! Your situation may have changed, per this email from the settlement administrator that some authors are receiving (subject heading: Anthropic Copyright Settlement: Allocation Updates)
We made updates that may affect your claim.
What Changed?
Wed, Sep 30,
2026 at 5:35 AM
Based on feedback from claimants, we updated how certain works are categorized.
In particular, where multiple claimants submitted default claims for the same
ownership interest in a work, we changed those works from agreement to
disagreement.
In addition, the portal is updated to reflect that some claimants changed their sole
ownership claims to default claims, and some claimants withdrew their claims.
What This Means for You
As a result of these updates, some works on your claim may now be categorized
differently. We encourage you to review the current allocations for your works.
How to Review and Update Your Allocations
Please use your claim number and PIN above to log into the portal below.
Claim Summary and Allocation Portal
For help making updates, please visit the allocation portal instructions.
If You Already Submitted Updates
If you already updated the allocation for a work, then you do not need to
submit those updates again. Any changes you submitted previously
through the online portal are recorded, but the portal is not being
updated in real time. If you submit multiple updates for the same
copyright number, your most recent submission will replace any earlier
submissionsWhat’s Next?
We will continue to work with claimants to help resolve disputes.
For works where all rightsholders are in agreement and where all necessary
payment information is provided, we expect to send a first round of payments in
November 2026.
If You Have Questions
Please contact us at 1-877-206-2314 or info@AnthropicCopyrightSettlement.com.
Regards,
Settlement Administrator

I do think that's true for a lot of physical play milestones! E.g., strider bikes are pretty cool bc toddlers learn to balance before they're smart enough to be very afraid of falling off! (And when they're closer to the ground.) A 6- or 7y.o., by contrast, gets caught on very rational fears!

Oh, and i would not have had celery available for stock making if I hadn't thrown some in the freezer the last time i had a veggie tray in the house, so that bit -definitely- worked.

The stock tastes good? I simmered it for like 2/3 of a day, so I can't 100% confirm the celery specifically made a meaningful contribution to the outcome. In the larger scale, stock with mirepoix does taste better than without, and I dunno that I really believed that before your advice. :)

one of the reasons that I warn researchers away from adapting commercial LLMs into their pipeline is that Big Tech has a history of sunsetting popular, usable products and replacing them with worse ones. (i'm trying to ween myself off of google scholar, but it is hard).

* if you want the best chance of everything going smoothly, you can update allocation one more time and mark all of the authors as rightsholders & ask for the default this time * she says money will be split between all valid claims, nothing going to an imaginary publisher * do this ASAP
