Good lord we got hit with the “only approved for at risk groups” line while trying to get a COVID booster. Friendly reminder that being overweight makes you qualify for it (my BMI is finally leading to positive health outcomes).

Yatsi can compile and evaluate functional closures now, and you can watch in the closure visualizer: yatsi.dev/closures/ It's still tailored to my own perspective on what's interesting. Gonna build a lot of these playgrounds until I figure out what's more useful for other people

Yatsi can finally return values from functions. And recursion just sort of works out of the box (I do have to add some call stack limits just in case): No real closures yet. Once I add that, I'll start working on some fun visualizations for how that all works under the hood.
An image of the Yatsi TypeScript interpreter playground, showing correct output for some console.log functions and a fibonacci calculation function to demonstrate return values, arguments, and recursion.

Parameters are coming soon but you have to pay extra to return values
000
Tyler Williams @coolsoftware.dev · 13/05/2026
Yatsi can run parameter-less functions that return `undefined` now:
A screen shot showing some TypeScript code that calls a function which calls console log. The source has the function body, and we see an expected output, with a status of "PASS" in the corner.

I really struggle to visualize this so putting in a shit ton of trace calls and piping it out to my little website helped a lot.

Tyler Williams @coolsoftware.dev · 12/05/2026
It doesn't! So you have to emit some bytecode as a placeholder first, and remember where you set your placeholders. When you're done compiling the relevant blocks of your if/else, you take note of your current position, and fill in those placeholders to say "hey the jump should end up over here"

Tyler Williams @coolsoftware.dev · 12/05/2026
If your compiler only has one pass at the nodes in your abstract syntax tree, and you have an if/else statement, how can it know ahead of time where you want it to jump to in the else case?
