Four panel screenshot of classic Simpsons episode where crowd is booing Mr burns. He asks Smithers “are they booing me?” Who says “uh no. They’re saying boo-urns, boo-urns”. Burns asks the crowd if they’re saying boo or boo urns. The crowd boos. Coleman says “I was saying boo urns”.

Yatsi can finally return values from functions. And recursion just sort of works out of the box (I do have to add some call stack limits just in case): No real closures yet. Once I add that, I'll start working on some fun visualizations for how that all works under the hood.
An image of the Yatsi TypeScript interpreter playground, showing correct output for some console.log functions and a fibonacci calculation function to demonstrate return values, arguments, and recursion.

Yatsi can run parameter-less functions that return `undefined` now:
A screen shot showing some TypeScript code that calls a function which calls console log. The source has the function body, and we see an expected output, with a status of "PASS" in the corner.

My simulator streamer is now able to shut down the running instance from Mac, and the website will clear out the video stream automatically instead of hanging on to the last frame. Getting closer to session management. Also: elastic IP set up so I can bookmark dev site, moved some UI around.

Health insurance in the US is fun because you can make graphs like this, and attempt to predict precisely how much you'll spend on health in a given year (both in and out of network) to choose the best option.
A graph showing eight lines: total outlays for a user based on premiums, deductibles, and copays for health insurance. The graph is quite complicated.

Didn't have time for a blog post this weekend because I have been hyper-fixated on a new project: self-hosted app previews on the web. Something like this...

My clox implementation has closures! Up next is garbage collection, which I'm very excited to implement and learn about since I primarily work with GC'd languages in my day-to-day.

LinkedIn post got an actually good-looking picture of me, but Bluesky gets a silly action shot. I had a blast talking about @expo.dev and EAS workflows at React Native Boston! Here's me getting animated about how Expo made my original presentation obsolete by shipping too many cool features lol.
Tyler Williams stands in front of a slide with a Fairly Oddparents meme that reads "this is where I'd show you a cool custom workflow - if I had one". The slide text is hidden behind the speaker, who is gesticulating wildly with his hands.

The content of the slide is mostly about how the original presentation was going to be about a custom EAS workflow, but Expo created a much better way to accomplish the task with a pre-packaged workflow, so the presentation had to be re-done, which is kind of funny when you think about it.

I’ve been reading through the web version of Crafting Interpreters (nice to code side-by-side), but the illustrations were so good and the content is amazing - so I bought the book to support and to really enjoy the details.

Sometimes people ask me for my opinions about React Native tech and it's basically just this.
Panel 1: "Hi! My name is Jason". Panel 2, second person: "Ah! Nice to meet, you Jason". Panel 3, the person is taking that name and trying to jam it into their brain, where there are already some squares in their cartoon head. A small rectangle says "friends", a small one says "family", and a much larger one is the Expo logo. The first person's name is squished going in, clearly not sinking in. Panel 4, second person: "Say Jarvis, wanna hear about building truly universal native apps with React ath run on Android, iOS, and the web?"

A twitter screenshot from @TkDodo - the first tweet says

What's the scenario 😅?

The benefit is that every time someone uses them, it might backfire later. There are mostly two usages:

1) Write data to local state / redux / zustand etc. This is a) an anti-pattern and b) will get out-of-sync as soon as you read data from cache only

Second tweet says:

2) use it to display success / error notifications, which breaks as soon as you use the same hook in two components, because each component calls the callback ... You'll wind up with multiple notifications, which is unwanted

Half a reply is cut off but it’s less relevant
