Powerful and important letter about artificial so-called intelligence from Sheila Hayman from Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy, University of Cambridge, in the FT today
Margaret McGirr’s letter (“AI can lend a hand, but it will struggle to replace one”, July 21) and Chine McDonald’s guest column (“This retro revival is more than a longing for the past”, Opinion, August 7) both touch (sic) on something that should be obvious, but is carefully ignored by almost everyone in the tech world. Namely that our intelligence is embodied, evolved and biological, and inseparable from our bodies.
The brain’s job is to control the body in the world; it is the last organ to develop.
Every square centimetre of our hands (and of the rest of our skin) contains about a 170 touch sensors or nerve endings, sensitive to different kinds of touch: a slap, a burn, a caress, a hug — each of which travels to different parts of the midbrain, prompting the appropriate response. Quickly to the autonomic nervous system for something dangerous; more slowly via a different channel for something carrying meaning.
In addition to the hand’s limitless versatility, it is self-repairing, regulates its own temperature, knows without being programmed how much pressure to exert on an egg, a tennis ball or a day-old chick, and can fuse neurologically to whatever it holds.
So when we put a glass down on the table or slide a knife through an apple, we feel the table, or the apple, not the glass or handle in our hand (try it!).
Finally, and most urgently, the entire human body — including the hands — does everything on 25 or so watts of completely renewable energy: a tiny fraction of what a humanoid robot, even one of the current primitive iteration of robots, needs.
The “retro revival” is thus not cultural nostalgia.
It’s millions of years of evolution crying out to be heard, before we suppress it totally in the service of an automated — and dead — planet.

I took this many years ago in Hell’s Kitchen, New York, while on the lam from the worst break-up of my life. Years later, a friend bought a print for his soon-to-be wife. He told me it was because “these are the best ways to enter into a marriage, or indeed any kind of relationship “

Originally written by Sarah Harrison and published in the magazine “Slightly Foxed” in Autumn 2010…
From the Editors
Autumn. Season of mists... Chudleigh the office dog is getting his winter coat and were thinking of turning on the heating.
Traditionally autumn is also one of the busiest publishing seasons when firms launch their 'big' books in time for the Christmas market, and review pages and bookshop displays expand. The novelist Sarah Harrison (whose piece on Teresa de Kerpely appeared in Issue 26) feels all those reviews and publishers blurbs need some decoding. Her brief guide tickled us, so we thought we’d pass it on:
Enchanting: there's a dog in it
Heart-warming: a dog and a child
Heart-rending: they die
Thoughtful: tedious
Thought-provoking: tedious and hectoring
Haunting: set in the past
Exotic: set abroad
Prize-winning: set in India
Perceptive: set in NW3
Epic: editor cowed by writer's reputation
From the pen of a master: same old same old
In the tradition of: shamelessly derivative
Provocative: irritating
Spare and taut: under-researched
Richly detailed: over-researched

I know we’re all very busy, but I do think the Minister for Justice passing a law to invent a carve out for the police’s requirement to have Judicial oversight of their use of Facial Recognition of public places was worth a bit of attention. www.thegist.ie/the-gist-hum...
The part of the legislation we are discussing here is called the carrying out of biometric analysis by members of the Garda Siochána. What is clear from a plain reading of this legislation, if enacted, is that it establishes a distinction between "biometric analysis" and "biometric identification".
Irrespective of what the Al Act says, here we are establishing a distinction between the two and only biometric analysis is permitted in this legislation."
Irrespective of what the Al Act says?
That is the wall Humpty Dumpty has decided to balance on. He will pass his law irrespective of the actual terms of the Al Act, and if it falls later he doesn't intend to be there to see it.
The mad yoke.

Anyone who says "Data centres create jobs" has never been in an actual data centre. I've been in ones where the only people working was the security guard. They're computers, not children, they generally don't need baby sitting.
