I gave Paint Tool SAI 2 a spin, and fell so deeply in love with it that I could not believe how I suffered with SAI1 and its basic tools for over 15 years. Anyway, cheers to my first SAI2 drawing AND my first suggestive art post! 🎀 #art #projecthailmary #phm

"but the cycle never repeats itself in quite the same way" #Art #Fanart #Rosalina #SuperMarioGalaxy

drawing of rosalina walking on a cosmic pool towards a black hole, reminiscent of the ending of Super Mario Galaxy 1. In front of the black hole is the comet observatory in travel form, with multiple lumas travelling towards the black hole. The black hole's internals have a soft budding of a blue sky and clouds, implying the new cycle's birth of Super Mario Galaxy 2

Humidity and a thin cloud layer made observing August 27th's partial lunar eclipse difficult, but I did my best with my telescope anyway. #astrophotography

While cleaning out my closet, I found a really old Super Mario Galaxy 2 poster tucked away in a cardboard tube. I have never felt more like I won one gajillion dollars, but if you ever thought I was normal about SMG2 (WHAT GAVE YOU THAT IDEA?), I was swinging the rolled-up poster around and whooping

Sometimes I forget I'm not alone on this website when I experience a lapse in judgement and 'tism out in posts. I'm not ashamed to geek about my favorite things, but I still feel a twinge of, "oh god, that's right" when someone I respect or admire likes one of those posts

Super Mario Galaxy 2 contains an unused post-processing effect that is supposed to draw an outline around objects and make the game appear like a comic book. This likely went unused due to looking very rough and filling objects with random black splotches.

Super Mario Galaxy skyboxes use perspective tricks to reduce the number of polygons that would normally be needed. The Melty Molten Galaxy skybox appears to be two large spheres, but is actually an illusion painted onto the sides of a burger.

This is what Melty Molten Galaxy's skybox looks like in the game.
Artist's conception of what it is representing: two stars connected with magma pillars.
However, moving the camera to the edge of the skybox reveals that the stars are not modeled spheres, and are instead partially drawn onto the wall.
The full model is a perspective trick that draws the horizon onto the sides of a burger-shaped skybox so that the spheres would not have to be modeled.
Modeling actual partial spheres of that size would require them to be extremely smooth, which would use a lot of polygons and can be avoided with this burger trick.

Addendum: as it turns out, this flag was originally designed for Super Mario Sunshine and then scrapped during development, then rescued from the unused files to be used in Super Mario Galaxy! Someone on the team may have been particularly fond of this reference to not let it go to waste.

The flag was originally used on a tower in Delfino Plaza. tcrf.net/Prerelease:Super_Mario_Sunshine/E3_2002, via "MSGTheEpic" on Twitter

In Super Mario Galaxy, there is a flag atop a tower in Sea Slide Galaxy depicting a seagull in a unique style not shared by anything else in the game. This is actually a reference to the classic 1984 Hayao Miyazaki film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.
