TIL there's a Safari bug that messes up border radius on outlines with negative offset. Image shows the same button in Chrome, FF, and Safari. Chrome and FF render the inner outline with the proper radius to match the outer border; Safari doesn't, so the corners are visibly mismatched.

Another reason a "System" setting in a website/app theme picker might be confusing, or may not work as expected: If you set a theme in your browser, it will override the system/OS setting. JavaScript and CSS then detect the browser preference, and have no way to detect the actual system setting.

The Mac system theme is set to "dark." However, the Chrome theme is set to "light." And, in CodePen, we see the CSS has a media query to detect the user's preferred theme, which resolves to light (the Chrome preference), rather than the actual OS preference.

Correct; on Chrome proper, you get an install prompt (which devs can customize, to some degree). The install option is also right there in the menu when you first open it. Admittedly it's a little far down the list, but it's not buried multiple levels deep or under "share."

This is one of many reasons I firmly refuse to believe LLMs represent actual intelligence. Intelligence makes mistakes, obviously. But it learns from first principles and is able to apply and build on those to reason through problems. Clearly nothing of the sort is going on here.

This post is an absolute banger.

A good architect’s most important skill isn’t designing systems. It’s knowing which systems not to build. It’s pushing back on complexity. It’s asking “why?” five times until the actual requirement emerges from the aspirational nonsense. It’s telling the CTO that their conference-inspired idea is a terrible fit for the team they actually have.

Claude will never do this. It’s trained to be helpful. Helpful means agreeable. Agreeable means you get an attaboy and a Jenga tower that passes for architecture.

Here’s what the AI-designed architecture looks like in practice.

It’s technically sound. The components make sense in isolation. The patterns are recognisable — event-driven here, CQRS there, a service mesh because why not. It looks like something a senior architect would produce. It passes the squint test.

But it wasn’t designed for your team. It wasn’t designed for your constraints. It wasn’t designed for the boring reality of your production environment — the VPC lockdowns, the legacy integrations, the team that’s never operated Kubernetes in production, the compliance requirements that mean half the managed services are off-limits.

It was designed for the median of everything Claude has seen. A generic best practice for a generic problem at a generic company. Which is to say, it was designed for nobody.

I couldn't find this anywhere, so I made it.

The Shield of the Trinity diagram, which traditionally shows the three identities of God and how they interrelate. (None of the three is the other, but all of the three are God.) However, in this reimagining, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have been replaced by the KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut logos, respectively, with an image of a Kentaco Hut building in the middle. Once again thinking about this garage door in my neighborhood and wondering what kind of sick sociopath would do this
