Steam and itch.io have removed thousands of video games in recent weeks deemed to be "adult content" in order to comply with strict rules from payment processors like Mastercard. These policies censor artists engaged in lawful speech. Mastercard shouldn't be the gatekeepers of our digital freedom.

Why did thousands of adult titles just disappear from the biggest PC gaming marketplaces?
Digital distribution platforms Steam and itch.io have tightened their rules about adult content – under pressure from payment processors. Why has this happened and where will it lead?

In our praise for Wikipedia this morning, let's not brain rot ourselves with '90s nostalgia. '90s internet culture was FULL of economic incentives, venture capitalist, investors. It's the era that gave Marc Andreessen the formidable economic power he now has, ffs. These things exist side by side

This is an insane thing to write about game development. www.nytimes.com/2025/07/28/a...

Most experts acknowledge that a takeover by artificial intelligence is coming for the video game industry within the next five years, and executives have already started preparing to restructure their companies in anticipation.
After all, it was one of the first sectors to deploy A.I. programming in the 1980s, with the four ghosts who chase Pac-Man each responding differently to the player's real-time movements.

In NES games, Luigi is at an unfair disadvantage since he cannot pause the game. While this might be self-evident to Japanese players, international players might find this handicap baffling. The reason is the Famicom's lack of Start and Select buttons on the second controller.

The UK Online Safety Act taking effect reminds me that Keir Starmer heard the story of the horrific, transphobic murder of Brianna Ghey, and the only part that he found truly upsetting, felt something must be done to stop it happening again, was Brianna having access to online support communities.

Interesting stuff. A chart of UK based Google searches. The blue line is searches in the last 7 days for "VPN", the red "Age Verification". So the Online Safety Act 2023 is achieving it's aim of keeping people safe then 🙄
A chart showing searches for two search terms over a one week period. One line is lower on the chart with roughly daily peaks starting in single digits, but increasing to 69% on 25th July.

A second line higher up shows results for "VPN". This starts of in low 20%s but increases to 100%.

The peaks of both match each other, so people are finding out about age verification and then searching for VPNs.

This age verification nonsense is undoubtedly going to be used to suppress LGBTQ+ content, regardless of its intended age. Some sites (like reddit) already classify LGBTQ+ as adult, so be prepared for resources intended for kids who might be questioning their gender/sexuality to be inaccessible
