One of my favorite very Seattle things is being at the beach with my dog and her sticking her nose up into the wind like Pepé Le Pew because she smells a seal or sea lion.

This is, without question, what they want. Two winters ago, a man froze to death in his car a mere 100 yards from Strauss’s home office. He doesn’t want to save the next person’s life, he wants them to die somewhere else.

Everything Strauss does should be framed with how someone froze to death in a car 100 yards from his office.

Sometime around 2010 I bought last-minute tickets to see LeBron play the Nets while on a work trip—got from my hotel in Manhattan to Barclays Center in Brooklyn in like 15 minutes. This shapes my entire view of transportation policy to this day.

If you thought Mariners’ radio broadcasts had a lot of in-game ad reads, you should listen to the Yankees on WFAN. You should also listen to the Yankees on WFAN to hear Dave Sims call playoff games. Pretty cool.

I care a lot about how the story of Mariners Baseball is told. Probably too much. The way yesterday looked was a reflection of how the cultural reset the M’s desperately need extends far beyond the field of play. New post up on The View Level. www.theviewlevel.com/p/yes-the-ma...

I had a conference downtown and went during the day because I saw they were a thing but the place is in a convenience store. It did not matter hours later at 2am after checking out various dives. So good I had one when I stopped at a bar near the airport on the way out of town, Weber’s Tavern.

Something I noticed this morning was the confirmation that not only was Barnes out of town foe the shooting, but both of his deputy chiefs were also on vacation. He brought in a second deputy chief himself, which is a bit unusual (and also expensive.)

Barnes makes around $370,000 a year. He has repeatedly been out of town, at events in other cities or at his family home in Chicago, during emergencies like today’s mass shootimg.

Barnes’ family residence is in Chicago and he rents here while making frequent trips home and out of town in general. Ive reached out to SPD; during past emergency incidents when he’s been elsewhere, they’ve told me it’s no problem because of his qualified staff.
