Sometime around 2010 I bought last-minute tickets to see LeBron play the Nets while on a work trip—got from my hotel in Manhattan to Barclays Center in Brooklyn in like 15 minutes. This shapes my entire view of transportation policy to this day.

Something I noticed this morning was the confirmation that not only was Barnes out of town foe the shooting, but both of his deputy chiefs were also on vacation. He brought in a second deputy chief himself, which is a bit unusual (and also expensive.)

Barnes’ family residence is in Chicago and he rents here while making frequent trips home and out of town in general. Ive reached out to SPD; during past emergency incidents when he’s been elsewhere, they’ve told me it’s no problem because of his qualified staff.
