We won! Cohasset Punch took home “Most Creative Cocktail” at last night’s “Pour Your Heart Out” Anti-Cruelty fundraiser for “Herbie’s Hurricane,” a frozen blend of Cohasset Punch, Chicago Cane Co-op overproof rum, pineapple, orange, lime, passionfruit, and hibiscus.

It’s almost mesmerizing watching those Cohasset Punch bottles make their way down the line, don’t you think? Another batch of the good stuff is in the books — many thanks to the team at Catalyst Distilling for making it happen!

Happy National Rum Day! We’ve got a new video with a brief history of Medford Rum — used in the first batches of Cohasset Punch in the 1890s — but Bluesky keeps giving me an upload error (check our other channels for the fun rum facts).

Bonfort’s Wine & Spirit Circular was America’s leading liquor trade journal from 1871-1919, and #OnThisDay in 1902 published a definitive account of the popularity explosion Cohasset Punch enjoyed in its earliest days in Gilded Age Chicago.

A little extra flavor for your heat-dome-appropriate Cohasset Slushie, with tea, cherry juice, and peach purée. We’ve also got wildfire smoke in Chicago today, so maybe a Lapsang Souchong is the appropriate tea choice here.

Here’s a Cohasset cocktail that’s not to be missed — Sparrow in Chicago’s Gold Coast riff on the 1930s ”Savoy Tango” mixes equal parts sloe gin, Cohasset Punch, and an aged Mexican cane juice rum finished in red wine casks. Rich, vinous, and a little smoky!

@maud.bsky.social I have alerts for "Cohasset Punch," (now that we've revived the bottled version), and found this decade-plus old tweet. Normally I wouldn't be creepy about it, but I feel like it's my duty to inform you the bar in question, Sparrow, now DOES serve Cohasset Punch. You did it!

#NationalBourbonDay seems like a good time to remind everyone that Cohasset Punch makes an excellent sub for your sweet vermouth in a Manhattan. (I prefer it in a 1:1 proportion instead of the standard 2:1 to suit the higher ABV and lower sweetness of the Cohasset Punch relative to vermouth.)

Upon Williams’ return to Chicago, the two began selling “Cohasset Punch” at their bar, and began bottling for distribution in 1899. Tom Newman retired in 1916 and died in 1928. Happy birthday, Tom Newman!

Williams requested a mixed drink that would “surpass anything ever before imbibed by any living soul,” and within 24 hours, Newman loaded a cask of his new punch onto a railcar. Upon tasting the new concoction, Williams asked what he called it, and Newman simply wired back the name “Cohasset”.

Born in Westchester County, NY, Newman moved to St. Louis in 1872 to manage the bar at the new Laclede Hotel (demolished 1961 for Kiener Plaza). He later managed the bar at St. Louis’ Windsor Club, and moved to Chicago in 1877 to manage a bar on Madison Street in the central business district.

Today would be Carl Ladner’s 149th Birthday, without whom there would likely be no Cohasset Punch. Though he didn’t create it, he successfully brought the brand back after Prohibition and installed the famous neon “Home of Cohasset Punch” sign on Madison St. which was a local landmark for decades.

Lewis Williams retired in 1916 and died in 1935, and though we have not located any photos of him, greatness apparently ran in the family — Williams’ grandson was noted Formula One driver and racing instructor Robert Lewis “Bob” Bondurant (1933–2021).

While there (the Boston Glove confirms the Williams family visited Crane in the summer of 1897), Williams overheard a discussion on the superiority of New England rum punches, and, as a Chicago-based bartender and liquor dealer, sensed a challenge.

Today, April 15, is Lewis Williams’ 174th Birthday! Without Lewis Williams there would be no Cohasset Punch. According to a 1902 issue of “Bonfort’s Wine & Spirit Circular,” Williams had a few years prior visited actor William H. Crane, a family friend, at his estate in Cohasset, Massachusetts.

Today is a bit of a solemn anniversary in Cohasset Punch world — #OnThisDay exactly 40 years ago, the old Cohasset Punch tavern in the Chicago loop closed. Cohasset Punch could still be found in liquor stores for a few more years (before our revival in 2024), but it was definitely the end of an era.
