My first romance novel ever was a Johanna Lindsey book I borrowed from the church library at age 12. I should probably talk about that in therapy… 🤣 it was one with a racial slur in the title and hoo boy does it still live rent free in my mind (in a bad way)

Yeah, with all my dogs that spray worked to discourage chewing for, like, 15 minutes. And then the puppy’s desire to chew that specific thing (instead of the dozen chew toys nearby that did not taste of bitter spray) always overcame his distaste for bitter spray.

My inbox is being flooded with fully AI-generated emails from prospective students. I tried to work out why I can't bring myself to read them, and ended up with some thoughts and advice for writing cold emails in the age of AI. My new post: blekhman.substack.com/p/why-i-am-n...

Reminder that the worst night of the year for pedestrian safety is Halloween. Let kids have fun. Walk or bike instead of driving.

I am being informed that I have not been deposed, and further, I am not allowed to abdicate. The purchasing system is, sadly, a glitch they will resolve soon, and I remain yoked to the Department Chair throne.

My college’s purchasing system suddenly decided that I do not have the authority to make purchases on my department’s account. Is this their way of letting me know my Department Chair authority has been revoked? Have I been deposed? Please, please tell me this means I’ve been deposed! 😝

He also, if walking behind a woman, intentionally changed pace to either walk around or slow way down, so she didn’t have a strange large man walking right behind her. This is basic decency. It’s recognizing that while HE knows he’s a nice guy, women have no way of knowing that.

Dude, be the opposite of this. A (very large, tall) male friend once told me he knew it’s scary for women when he walks behind them, esp at night. So he pretends to call a friend to chat & says “yeah, I’m headed to X location, walking down Central now…” so women know he’s not following them.

Have you ever tried to read a scientific journal article and been told “you don’t have access, pay to download this article?” Did you know that the author of that article gets $0 if you pay? Instead, you can email the author and ask for a free copy! I’d be delighted to help and answer questions!

As a kid who sometimes didn’t eat because I forgot my lunch and/lunch money, and who also occasionally shared half her lunch with friends who forgot theirs, I’m glad no kid in my kids’ school will experience that.

My kids’ school in OH has free lunch for everyone and it’s great. A big benefit to all kids is that they don’t have to remember their lunch money or count on their parents remembering lunch money. ADHD families of all incomes benefit from this (including mine).

Going to add, as someone living in rural Ohio with lots of Amish neighbors: Rural hospitals are closing. Mine did not have a pediatrician for the past month. Kids can’t be vaccinated in pharmacies like adults. Amish typically don’t own cars. All this makes it really hard to vaccinate kids.

I don’t know this particular machine, but all the bread machines my family has had over the years do all the work. You dump in ingredients and it mixes, kneads, rises, kneads again (if necessary), and then bakes the bread. Has many different settings for different types of breads, rise length, etc.

I’m sorry. I did similar last year when my mother in law passed away - worked on service and responded to emails and graded student work when I wasn’t actually traveling or at the memorial. It’s hard when you feel if you don’t continue to work, the students suffer.

Also, evolutionary biologists of all kinds get sent pamphlets, books, etc., explaining how Darwin had it all wrong and THIS PARTICULAR religion’s origin story explains why.

Yup. As a bird morphologist and biomechanicist, I get ones about “novel” “theories” of how birds evolved flight, or new ways of understanding how birds defy the basic physics of flight. For basically any subject, there’s a dude with no training who thinks he’s discovered the most important idea.

Yeah. I’d have trouble with it, but would probably adapt with time if I tried. My friends’ kids here in rural Ohio raise livestock for 4H projects that end up going to slaughter. Those animals are pampered, named, and beloved, until they end up being food, just like Andean guinea pigs.

Natalie Wright, Ph.D. @coereba.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
They all had names. And the kids were used to their named pets ending up on the dinner table. It’s that way for rural farm kids around the world. Just because it seems upsetting to people who don’t raise their own livestock doesn’t mean it’s traumatic to kids who live it.

When I worked in the Peruvian Andes, nearly every family kept cuy in the corner of their kitchen, feeding them vegetable scraps & potato peels. Kids snuggled & played with & named them all. I think they got attached, despite the guinea pigs being destined for the dinner table.

What I’m saying is, I’m running out of ways to cook tomatoes, squash, and basil and have it not feel like a repeat meal. I’ve made pizza, pesto (put into pizza and then into pasta), roasted veggies with sausage, roasted veggies with tofu, stuffed squash, and a veggie-orzo bake.

We can’t find lab coats that fit either our skinny women or our shorter, larger women. Those two grouping describe most of us. Women are either wearing lab coats whose arms are too short (risking burns on their forearms), or lab coats with very wide arms (which catch on stuff).

Hey female scientists - do you have a lab coat you love? I’m looking for lab coats designed for women’s bodies that won’t break the bank. We are struggling to find coats that fit correctly in the waist and around the arms with sleeves of the correct length.

I started my PhD program with an eight week old at home, sole income being my doctoral stipend, in a history program, in Knoxville, TN. And every month we got a new book to read to my son, free, mailed to us, so my kid, my kids, grew up in rooms full of books even when I had no money. That's Dolly.

My kids each received a book every month form Dolly’s Imagination Library. They were excellent, high quality books that lasted. Which means when my kids outgrew them, the books were in good enough shape to pass onto other kids via local Free Little Libraries.

Yeah we don’t use DoorDash, so I don’t know about them. The Kroger app doesn’t let you do that. And Kroger is the only grocery store in town.

If it was just about payment, there are many easy solutions depending on household preferences for shared finances. But for us it’s about who and when is doing the grocery shopping and pickup - both of us need access to the same account.
120
Natalie Wright, Ph.D. @coereba.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
Yeah. We need to share a single account so we can both add items to the same cart, and so either one of us can go pick stuff up. We both just add stuff as we realize we need it, until the day before one of us has time to pick up groceries, at which point they place the order.

Natalie Wright, Ph.D. @coereba.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
I’m pretty sure the reason is patriarchy. Why, in a household with two adults, would the husband ever need to access a household grocery store app account? Grocery shopping is the wife’s job. /sarcasm

He owns the Walmart app, while I own the Kroger app. And we’re constantly annoying the other with demands for verification codes, while expire after 43.2 seconds.

Instead Husband and I are constantly having to ask the other to send verification codes so whoever isn’t the owner of the account email/phone can also log in to buy groceries.

Natalie Wright, Ph.D. @coereba.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
Why can’t two people with two different login emails/phone numbers share the same single account for things like a grocery store app? Wouldn’t it be very helpful for both adults in a household to easily add groceries to the cart?
