None of this is inevitable. We could require compensation for stolen work, "know your author" verification programs to keep the slop out, data centers that fund community and arts programs, and protections that let arts workers do more of what only they can do.

Is a good AI future possible? Right now it's hard to feel hopeful: authors' work was stolen to train the models, chatbot-powered scammers are flooding the book market with slop and trying to steal from us, and arts workers are being told to train their own replacements.
