Bertrand Russell, one of the mathematicians associated with the crisis of foundations in mathematics in the early 20th century. He tried to co-write a book defining all math and logic from first principles, until Gödel fucked it up for everybody.

"Cats. I hate cats. Gotta stab 'em all," said the President, repeatedly shanking an outline of a cat someone had drawn on a wall with a dull letter-opener. It was not immediately clear what Mr. Trump's feelings towards cats were, but pundits were quick to point out his cat-friendly policies

At long last, we have created the largely inert and harmless AI that doesn't really want anything from the classic sci-fi novel If You Happen To Create A Largely Inert And Harmless AI Without Wants Or Autonomy, Stop! Take A Victory Lap! Don't Give It Wants Or Autonomy! Our work has only just begun.

If only it were that easy! We fought our way down to the quite beautiful O(n log(n)) complexity class for int mult over the course of decades, and it was hypothesized by many to be optimal. We felt great! But know we know that it's false, and even if it's only a bit false, that's that. It's gone.

Cobalt60 @co60.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
They dealt with this complexity by encoding the successive steps of the computation in ever-finer spatial scales, so that turbulent mixing ends up working for them. It's clever!

Cobalt60 @co60.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
No, constant viscosity (no walls or boundaries) makes it way, way harder than you'd imagine. You can imagine a flow as _like_ a channel for a split second, but it would immediately collapse in on itself as the higher-pressure still 'walls' are drawn inward. It's a massively harder problem.

AFAICT, the result defines an explicit equivalence between the _arbitrary concept of computing_ and the _arbitrary concept of fluid dynamics_ by providing a framework to turn a problem from one domain into a problem from the other. Just super bizarre stuff.

Cobalt60 @co60.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
That's fluidics, and it's a very different result. In fluidics, you're saying "if you give me pipes and valves and pressure, I can do calculations." This result is... way more bizarre. This would be no pipes, no valves, just _water sloshing around_. It's not physically realizable, but still amazing

These are a thing in math where something looks really pretty for a while, then suddenly falls apart Some of these new OpenAI results, like the integer multiplication one, took a really pretty result we had, and left us with something that is maybe... a little less pretty

Cobalt60 @co60.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
The image is a well-proven thing, these proofs are just reminiscent. Like, integer multiplication being O(n log(n)) complexity was a great, recent human result, looked like it was an elegant and beautiful lower bound after lots of improvement... nope, OpenAI just beat it, and it's ugly again

I'm willing to admit that some of the perpetuation of that fracture came as the result of a vast influx of unregulated money into American politics, which has a disproportionately-powerful global influence, in the wake of Citizens United, but... we used to all get one newspaper and ~five channels

Cobalt60 @co60.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I mean, this ignores the vast amount of evidence that the level of societal fracture we see today came after, and due to, the spread of algorithmic content in social media giving each and every person their own bubble. The crank problem was, and is, directly informed by social media.

I get for small one-offs no one wants to set up dashboards or whatever, but making sure you're collecting the data is still really important. You can't learn from traces you didn't capture.

This is your scheduled reminder that observability is a core concern of any application, and collecting logs, metrics, and traces to a persistent store for analysis is a Good Idea Always-on tracing is not expensive, and makes troubleshooting intermittent or distributed failures trivial

"Only the weather" on its own would make a lot of pilots laugh -- that's one hell of a thing to slap an 'only' on! -- but there's a ton more factors. Let's mention the most important two: the people in the cockpit, and the physical aircraft everyone's in. Safety starts with the pilots and plane.

CeleryBench remains the oldest and most important calibration point for human-AI interaction. An unconvincing Flarhgunnstow, or a nude Tayne being displayed without proper verbal and textual warnings, are immediate red flags for model alignment + capabilities

Its take on improving the visuals is pretty good, too. The voxel-based stuff is easiest (can be enhanced and converted to a 3D model) but the 2D stuff is decent too, though determining the good vs. bad jaggies might be a fight. This has taken just a fraction of a 5-hour usage limit. I'm blown away
A high-resolution render of a Soviet Red Alert 2 base. The tanks and ore miners are significantly more well-defined than in the original release, and though there is some slight visual artifacting, the pixel art is similarly enhanced.

I always really wanted a remake of Red Alert 2, one that properly supports modern networking and graphics hardware, in a modern, maintainable language. Turns out that's super duper doable! Opus 5.5 is not having any problems with this.

Just got my print from @rey-notnecessarily.bsky.social! It is even more beautiful in person. Getting a frame for it today! It was delivered in a rainstorm, and I couldn't find it last night, so I feared the worst... but even though the packaging was nearly soaked through, the art was fine. Bless.

this is exactly my opinion. there may be a superstrate of extremely difficult and unique safety problems around AI, but the substrate is simply that no one takes basic precautions seriously becasue they imagine (or pretend to imaigne) that it is futile, and basic precautions slow down launches.
