I am now imagining some civilization 10 billion light years away saying "well, clearly there's no other intelligent life in the universe, no one is answering our fast radio burst messages" and it's making me chuckle

I keep trying to think of any historical example where a given technology's PROMOTERS AND TRUE BELIEVERS were like 'we are absolutely going to ruin your fucking life so be prepared like it's the end of the world'
Andrew Curran: Axios is reporting that the top labs are wargaming scenarios for the aftermath of a catastrophic event in the next 6 - 12 months, that some executives now see as being inevitable.

Axios: Top executives at Anthropic, OpenAl and other Al companies are privately gaming out scenarios for a public and political revolt after a catastrophic AI event.
Why it matters: These officials anticipate a large-scale event, most likely a cyberattack, that shuts down access to financial services, internet connectivity, or even power and water.

Edouard Harris: This is our view as well. Relatedly, average people will want to increase their level of personal resilience and preparedness as their resources allow. We will be publishing about this soon.

Nick Farina: Best ways to be prepared? Generators, water, books and DVDs?

Edouard Harris: Power, water, food, sanitation for most part. Parts of this depend on your geo latitude - solar vs propane for eg.

But also: set aside a computer that is not (and ideally has never been) connected to the internet. Buy faraday pouches and tape. Print out essential docs on paper.

Anne Carson was denied tenure at Princeton. While chair of Classics at McGill, the dept was eliminated. Donna Strickland (2018, Chemistry) was denied promotion to full professor at Waterloo. Katalin Karikó (2023, Medicine) was repeatedly demoted by Penn. All four universities now claim them.

It's Friday and we were OFC overdue for some market manipulation. But what's the point here? Does he think he can win the midterms simply by telling people "no, don't believe your lying wallets, diesel is cheap again"? I get that delivering that sanction relief is what Papa Putin wants, but so what?

So you think any criticism of Carney and his Harper-era policies and behaviour is equivalent to terrorising Ottawa over disagreement w/ public health measures (mostly taken by provinces) in dealing with a deadly pandemic? Tbh, I'm just sorry you're THIS incapable of critical thinking. Sucks to suck

Camila L @clond.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
What you call "[our] politics and philosophies" is our recognition that Carney IS one of the wolves. That for all his wonderful rhetoric, his actions make Canada more vulnerable to foreign interference, entrenching US tech, and selling out our futures to the rich. Can't hold two thoughts at once?

This is the exact same approach the Liberals fought under Stephen Harper. Now, they're bringing back that very same agenda and Harper is cheering from the sidelines.

4 What does the Carney government‘s inability to withstand pressure over a few panels at a conference tell us about its willingness to actually regulate US tech companies, or to pursue “digital sovereignty”? Does Mark Carney’s digital sovereignty include predatory and monopolistic US corporations?

3 All signs point to Canada withdrawing from the conference due to US pressure. Even in normal times, the US complains about a lot of stuff. What is the Carney government’s threshold for deciding when to appease Trump? After almost two years, and contra the speeches, it seems to be very low.

At minimum, by calling out Mark Carney's selling out of Canadians, and by making it as uncomfortable as possible for MPs to give him the votes to do so. Will that fully get rid of capitalism? Absolutely not, but it might slow down the backsliding more than being this gif in pro-Carney, human form

That's pretty good, actually. Having this on the record makes it easy easier to fight. Now you don't have to say "I'm not a socialist," you can say "unlike my colleagues across the aisle, I don't believe companies should exploit employees or off-shore jobs" and give examples.

Has Cory Doctorow (@doctorow.pluralistic.net) commented on this yet? It seems like a great first step towards his idea of IP law reform (though of course it will cause a ton of backlash, the question will be why can you steal some protected IP, like books and art, and not others, like software? 🤷🏻‍♀️)

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."
