A glacier collapse is most likely cause of the Nepal disaster | New Scientist
Melting snow appears to have weakened a steep glacier at an altitude of 5 kilometres, causing it to plummet around a kilometre into the river valley below

Zsolt Lengyel @climatius.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
Himalayan glaciers are rapidly losing mass, unusually high temperatures and snowmelt preceded this event, and warming can destabilise high-mountain environments. As Shugar puts it, an increasing frequency of such collapses would point toward warming as a contributing factor.

being the primary event. Was climate change the cause? We cannot responsibly say that yet. Glaciers can collapse for several reasons, but the climatic background is impossible to ignore:

Zsolt Lengyel @climatius.bsky.social · 26/08/2026
According to glaciologist Dan Shugar , part of the glacier appears to have broken away and fallen more than a kilometre vertically into the valley below, generating an enormous ice-rock avalanche and debris flow. Seismic evidence appears consistent with mass movement rather than an earthquake

8/8 If simply moving an existing low-carbon MWh from the grid to an AI server can be repackaged as emission reduction, people will be right to ask what exactly 40 years of carbon-pricing and carbon-market institution-building have achieved & what they are being asked to trust. :

4/ The arithmetic is painfully simple. If 1 MWh previously went from the landfill generator into the UK grid and is now diverted to an AI data centre, the data centre avoids buying 1 MWh from the grid, but the grid simultaneously loses 1 MWh of low-carbon generation.
