Updated data from NASA GISTEMP came in. The first half of 2026 was the 3rd warmest on record, June was the 2nd warmest on record. With the onset of El Niño it's certainly in the realm of possibilities that 2026 will end up as the warmest on record.

Today marks 139 years since the maximum temperature record of 33.3°C was set in Ireland in 1887 at Kilkenny Castle. We got very close yesterday, with a couple stations reaching 32°C. You can read the in-depth analysis of how the record was verified in the International Journal of Climatology

It's a weird time to be working on extremes - when you can spend weeks working on a record, just to see it smashed soon after. Unfortunately this won't be the last maximum temperature record to break. More info here: www.met.ie/climate-stat...

Our previous May maximum temperature record was 28.4°C, set in 1997 in Co. Kerry. Last week on the 26th, that record was smashed, by a full 2°C at several different stations. If it is verified, the new record will be 30.9°C, which was recorded in two locations: Tipperary and Limerick. 2/

Executive summary: 24-hour extremes, in frequency and amount of rain, are increasing more than at the hourly scale, but this begins to break down regionally when more stringent definitions of extremes are used.

We looked at changes to extreme precip events across the eastern US. While it should come as no surprise that they are increasing in both frequency and total amount of rainfall, we wanted to look at how these are changing across a spectrum of extremes and at different time scales.
