Been the longest week ever, so I was really looking forward to 5 PM today. What makes it even better is this: I thought Boddingtons had been discontinued but I found two 4-packs at the shop near me last week. I shouted aloud in the store upon finding them! Just poured a long tall pint. Cheers!

Also reading The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, by Humphrey Carpenter. I’ve been reading 25 pages per day, my nighttime ritual & I realized last night that on this schedule, coincidentally, I’ll finish the book on March 25th, the anniversary of the Ring’s unmaking in the fires of Mount Doom.

This afternoon, I finished the book. Oh, I loved it, and truly recommend it, if you love dogs, or poetry, or especially if you love both. This one was beautiful.

“As young as I look,
I am growing older faster than he,
seven to one
is the ratio they tend to say.

it would be the sweetest

Aigh! Alert alert! One of my favorite poets, Billy Collins, has begun this poem with a reference to a line from one of my other favorite poets, Mary Oliver! I am in heaven.

I love that @pattymo.com referenced Halloween is Grinch Night on this week’s episode of @whatatimepod.bsky.social ! We showed it to our son this past Halloween. I hadn’t seen it since high school. I’d remembered it was surreal but had forgotten how wildly weird. Grinch brows played a big part!

Next up, Johnny Cash. A record from my Dad’s collection. I think most likely my first introduction as a young child that music could break your heart and make you feel good all the same time. “Ringing the Bells for Jim” is such a devastating and touching song.
